Health Unit Coordinator – Cardiac ICU (Part-Time Evenings) Salary Range: $16.60 – $24.07 per hour At Northwestern Medicine, every patient interaction makes a difference in cultivating a positive workplace. Week 1: Monday, Friday, Saturday. Week 2: Sunday, Thursday. Job Overview: The Health Unit Coordinator reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and regulatory and accreditation standards. Performs unit‑based reception, clerical, medical record and patient registration functions; sets priorities and handles emergency situations calmly; is customer‑oriented and communicates with all levels of staff, patients and families; serves as liaison between patient‑care units and related departments; manages overall unit workflow with the charge RN and/or assistant manager. Responsibilities Present a friendly, approachable, professional demeanor and appearance. Provide accurate information and timely updates to patients and customers. Address questions and concerns promptly or identify appropriate resources. Provide directions or help to patients and customers with finding their way. Use effective service‑recovery skills to solve problems or service breakdowns. Demonstrate teamwork by helping co‑workers within and across departments. Communicate effectively with others, respect diverse opinions and styles, and acknowledge assistance and contributions of others. Use organizational and unit/department resources efficiently. Manage work schedule efficiently, completing tasks and assignments on time. Contribute to opportunities and processes for continuous improvement. Participate in efforts to reduce costs, streamline work processes, and improve and grow services we provide. Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with other team members. Have respect for and understanding of other disciplines. Coordinate all work with the Manager and Charge Nurse. Communicate appropriately and clearly to Manager, Charge Nurse, co‑workers and physicians. Consult other departments as appropriate to provide an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs. Retrieve all lab results from computer and bring results to the attention of the nurse caring for the patient. Interact professionally with patients/family and provide explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary. Pre‑prepare medical records for new admissions and disassemble charts and forward to Medical Records upon patient discharge. Maintain proper record assembly contents in chronological order behind tabs. Obtain necessary signatures and documents; be aware of Petition and Certificate process regarding involuntary admissions. Transcribe accurately and clarify handwritten orders and clinical data; enter and verify orders in the computer to ensure timely and accurate delivery of medications, supplies, diagnostic/therapeutic tests/services. Seek out and obtain learning opportunities; participate in professional growth and development activities and share knowledge from continuing education programs with co‑workers. Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly. Demonstrate the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. Show confidence and success with multiple, high‑level, time‑sensitive tasks. Answer telephone, monitor unit closed‑circuit camera and intercom/door entry system politely and communicate information to appropriate staff/family. Utilize critical‑thinking skills to prioritize and complete unit work quickly as needs change. Monitor patient entry in the computer against actual status and correct when necessary. Perform pre‑census and validate daily admission, discharge and census lists. Register patient in the computer. Conduct telephone screenings (inquiry calls) resulting in appropriate disposition based on the phone contact, observing patient confidentiality rules and Release of Information data. Order supplies and print all forms used for patient charts. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Basic computer knowledge. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbal and in writing. Ability to assess and determine situations requiring an interpreter and to use interpreter services effectively. Preferred Qualifications One year of experience in a pertinent clinical specialty.
