Maintenance Technician II

Pay and Benefits Pays $35.48 - $42.37 per hour. This position is eligible for education pay, bilingual pay, and longevity pay. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, HRA VEBA account, retirement benefits (PERS 2 or 3), and optional Deferred Compensation. The City provides 10 paid holidays, 2 personal holidays annually, accrues vacation leave at 80 hours in the first year with increases thereafter, and awards 8 hours of sick leave per month. Major Functions and Purpose This position coordinates and participates in the routine maintenance and construction of Public Works improvements for the City and assists management in planning new construction and maintenance projects. General Function Under the general direction of the Supervisor and Leads, this position is responsible for the efficient and effective use of equipment, materials, and labor to complete maintenance and construction projects in a timely and cost‑effective manner. Supervision Responsibilities This position has no supervision responsibilities, but may provide oversight and direction to community service workers or volunteers, seasonal or temporary employees, and co‑workers as directed by the supervisor or designee. Work involves coordinating field activities, ensuring that projects are completed as scheduled, establishing work priorities, and fully participating in all field activities. Job Duties and Responsibilities Establish work priorities and change priorities to meet changed circumstances, with the approval of the Lead or Supervisor Inspect projects in progress and equipment for repairs and safety Make recommendations for equipment or modifications to existing equipment Train other employees in proper maintenance procedures and equipment operations as directed Ensure proper inventory level of materials and parts for maintenance and repair work Installing water, sewer, and stormwater pipe systems Repairing and maintaining water, street, parks, stormwater, sewer, and facility assets Patching, paving, and grading roads and walkways Constructing and repairing concrete sidewalks Performing street sweeping Conducting vegetation control/pruning in City right of way, stormwater ponds, and easements Troubleshooting SCADA/Telemetry for water/sewer facilities Repairing and installing uniform traffic control devices Conducting snow operations including anti‑icing, sanding, plowing, and snow removal Performing minor installations and repairs (carpentry, electrical, plumbing) Reading and maintaining water meters Installing and maintaining hydrants and specialized water system appurtenances Installing and maintaining water and wastewater pumps Perform all duties of Maintenance Technician I as required or directed Reliable and regular attendance is required Other duties as assigned Contacts and Relationships The Maintenance Technician II has extensive contact with other City employees and the public. Working Conditions Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions. May be required to work in confined spaces and on ladders, inclines, and noisy work areas. May be exposed to extremes in temperature, chemicals, direct sunlight, dust, pollen, machinery or its moving parts, pesticides, insecticides, noxious fumes, and/or insect stings. Must wear protective clothing or equipment as required. The role is largely independent under the direction of a Lead or Supervisor. Employees may need to attend meetings outside normal work hours, be called back before or after regularly scheduled work or on weekends, and participate in a weekend standby rotation. Overtime may be required. Employees with a CDL are subject to Drug and Alcohol Testing as mandated by federal law. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of repair and maintenance methods for Public Works assets, occupational hazards, safety precautions, basic grounds keeping, equipment techniques, carpentry and flatwork, and temporary traffic control applying MUTCD standards. Knowledge specific to assignment in utility: SCADA/Telemetry controls, programming, troubleshooting, electrical and pump controls maintenance and troubleshooting. Skilled in operating a variety of light and heavy equipment, communication with co‑workers, vendors, consultants, contractors, and the public, resolve problems, review project plans, maintain records and prepare work reports, gauge project progress, adjust to meet deadlines, and respond to standby duties. Ability to maintain records and prepare work reports; gauge project progress and recommend adjustments; meet required proficiencies for standby duty; comprehend technical instructions and repair manuals; interact courteously with the public; establish and maintain collaborative working relationships. Physical Requirements Must have stamina for moderate to strenuous activity, stand or walk for long periods, traverse rough terrain, work in or over water or at heights, climb up to 100 feet, bend or work in tight/confined areas, carry up to 60 pounds, and hear alarms. Minimum Requirements High school diploma or GED is required. Three years of experience at an equivalent level in assigned area or performing skilled or semi‑skilled labor comparable to municipal Public Works is required. Current, valid, unsuspended driver’s license is required upon hire. Out‑of‑state candidates must obtain a Washington state driver’s license. Washington State Traffic Control Flagger certification, First Aid/CPR certification, and Class A commercial driver’s license with tanker and airbrake endorsements are required within specified timelines.
