Job Title: Facilities Specialist | Location: Rockville, MD | Hours/Schedule: Part-Time (24 hours/week + Rotating On-Call Coverage); schedule is flexible | Compensation: $24.00–$30.00/hour (+ $3/hour on-call pay) | Type: Contract Overview Our client, a growing biotechnology organization in Rockville, MD, is seeking a Facilities Specialist to support daily facilities operations and critical building systems across its research campus. This position combines hands‑on facilities maintenance, contractor coordination, and emergency response while supporting laboratory, office, and vivarium operations. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, proactive, and comfortable working independently in a regulated research environment. Responsibilities Monitor, troubleshoot, and support critical building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boilers, humidifiers, and BMS. Respond to after-hours facility emergencies within a one-hour response time during assigned on-call rotations. Coordinate contractors, vendors, security, janitorial services, pest control, and maintenance activities. Perform routine facility inspections, preventative maintenance coordination, and safety readiness checks. Support office moves, workstation setup, conference room preparation, onboarding activities, and general facilities operations. Assist with shipping/receiving, mail services, and other building support functions as needed. Ensure compliance with safety procedures, PPE requirements, and facility operating standards. Requirements High School Diploma or equivalent. 5+ years of facilities or building maintenance experience supporting critical building systems. Strong mechanical aptitude with experience supporting HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boilers, humidifiers, or similar utility systems. Experience coordinating contractors and vendors within a commercial, laboratory, healthcare, manufacturing, or other regulated environment. Comfortable participating in an on-call rotation with a one-hour emergency response requirement, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and access rooftop mechanical equipment. Comfortable working in a research environment that includes vivarium operations.
