Job Title Assistant Manager Department/Function Operations Location Field, in Shop Reports to General Manager Details Full Time, Nonexempt Travel Requirements Rarely General Description Leads and behaves according to Potbelly Values. Leads and develops people to execute outstanding product quality and customer service, build sales and control costs for each shift. Assistant Managers must exercise a great deal of judgment and discretion regarding supervising employees and resolving customer issues. Any decisions must be consistent with operating policies and procedures. Essential areas of focus include, but are not limited to: People Train, coach and develop employees and shift leaders. Formally evaluate Associate and Shift Leader performance, including completion and sign off on appraisals. Conduct weekly feedback sessions with Associates, Certified Trainers and Shift Leaders. Know, enforce, and educate staff on all work rules, personnel policies, labor laws, and security and safety procedures. Recommend and implement appropriate corrective action. Recommend hiring and retention of Associates, Certified Trainers and Shift Leaders. Execute a plan to decrease turnover and improve job satisfaction. Schedule Associates, Certified Trainers and Shift Leaders. Update communication board with critical shop information. Hold monthly Associate, Certified Trainer and Shift Leader meetings. Develop employee schedules. Customers Create positive customer experiences. Handle customer complaints effectively. Maintain quality standards for raw and finished products, service speed, cleanliness, and sanitation. Assign daily cleaning duties and conduct weekly follow‑ups. Enforce and manage food safety requirements and practices. Enforce uniform policy and maintain shop security and safety. Manage back‑of‑the‑house operations to ensure standards are met. Sales Drive neighborhood shop marketing and promotions to maximize sales potential, including sourcing and blitzing outside the shop for recruiting and marketing purposes. Profit Control assigned P & L line items. Control food components, labor, waste, and cash across shifts. Count drawers and ensure proper cash handling procedures are followed. Update daily prep sheet weekly. Maintain all food pars, appropriate inventory, and place shop orders. Essential Physical Functions Work a minimum of 45 hours per week. Stand/walk for 9‑10 hours per day and sit for 1‑2 hours per day. Exert mobility for up to five hours. Lift up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Reach, bend, stoop, carry, and manipulate items while keying in data. Work in both warm and cool environments, indoors and outdoors. Tolerate high noise levels and potential allergens such as peanuts, eggs, dairy, gluten, soy, seafood, and shellfish. Manage a fast‑paced, high‑volume, customer‑focused restaurant through organization, scheduling, problem‑solving, cleanliness, training, marketing, and customer service. Experience, Education and Behaviors Represent company values. Minimum of 2 years management experience in a restaurant or retail environment. High School degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred. All Shift Leaders and Managers must be trained and pass a Food Safety Certification course (state‑specific requirements). Communicate in English verbally and in writing. Organize and coordinate schedules, supervise staff, resolve conflicts, and provide customer service. Prioritize tasks and meet shift deadlines. Provide exceptional customer service.
