Job Title: Project Manager – Transmission and Substation Programs

Job Description

This Project Manager role supports a long-term transmission and substation program within the electric utility sector, overseeing a portfolio of full EPC capital projects ranging from approximately $500,000 to $10 million. The position sits within a PMO that includes both Development and Execution teams, and you will help deliver complex power and electric utility projects while managing engineering consultants, contractors, and utility stakeholders. Assistant Project Managers will independently manage smaller projects, and candidates will be aligned to either Development or Execution based on experience and location.

Responsibilities

• Support Project Managers and project teams in executing transmission and substation projects from kickoff through closeout.
• Assist with detailed project planning, coordination, tracking, and reporting activities to ensure project goals are achieved.
• Coordinate with internal teams, clients, vendors, and subcontractors to facilitate smooth project execution.
• Identify and escalate project issues, risks, and concerns to senior project leadership in a timely manner.
• Ensure projects follow established company processes, procedures, and best practices throughout the lifecycle.
• Track project schedules, deliverables, action items, and milestones to support successful execution.
• Support resource coordination and help identify potential schedule or workload conflicts across the project portfolio.
• Maintain comprehensive project documentation and ensure records are accurate, organized, and up to date.
• Participate in project meetings and distribute meeting notes, action items, and status updates to stakeholders.
• Assist with tracking project budgets, costs, invoices, and overall financial performance of assigned projects.
• Help monitor project expenses and support forecasting activities for capital budget power and industrial projects.
• Support contract administration and procurement activities under the guidance of senior project personnel.
• Assist with change orders, scope changes, and related project documentation as required.
• Support the development and maintenance of project schedules, work plans, and resource plans for multiple projects.
• Track progress against project timelines and communicate schedule updates to internal and external stakeholders.
• Assist with risk tracking and mitigation planning throughout the project lifecycle.
• Serve as a day-to-day project contact for internal team members and support client communications.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with customers, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
• Escalate significant customer concerns or project issues to senior project leadership when appropriate.
• Participate in lessons learned discussions and help identify opportunities to improve project execution and outcomes.
• Support implementation of project management tools, processes, and best practices across the PMO.
• Actively seek opportunities to develop project management skills and industry knowledge in electric utility and energy infrastructure.
• Support compliance with company health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
• Promote a safe work environment and participate in project safety initiatives at office and field locations.
• Manage scope, schedule, and budget for assigned projects, ensuring alignment with program objectives and stakeholder expectations.
• Oversee engineering consultants, contractors, and utility stakeholders, ensuring coordinated delivery of engineering, construction, and commissioning activities.
• Contribute to the successful delivery of transmission, distribution, generation, and substation projects within a multi-year capital improvement program.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a closely related discipline.
• Minimum of 5 years of project management experience supporting full EPC capital budget power or electric utility projects, or comparable industrial projects.
• Demonstrated experience managing engineering consultants, contractors, and utility stakeholders on complex projects.
• Proven ability to manage project scope, schedule, and budget across multiple concurrent assignments.
• Proficiency with project controls, scheduling, and financial reporting tools.
• Strong communication skills with proven client-facing and stakeholder management experience.
• Experience in electric utility, construction, and power-related projects as a core part of prior roles.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Strongly preferred experience in electric utility projects, including generation, substation, transmission, and distribution.
• Preferred experience successfully managing projects exceeding $10 million in total installed cost.
• Preferred background managing utility capital improvement programs or large-scale energy infrastructure projects.
• Experience with P6 (Primavera) and Microsoft Project or similar project management software.
• Strong understanding of utility project lifecycles from engineering and design through construction and commissioning.
• Experience in construction management, project engineering, and utility distribution projects.
• Exposure to substation, transmission and distribution, transmission line, project development, project execution, and subcontractor management.
• Experience in electrical or electrical construction and power generation projects.
• Interest in continuous improvement of project management processes, tools, and methodologies.

Work Environment

This role supports transmission and substation projects within a multi-year electric utility program. Assistant Project Managers will independently manage smaller substation projects within both Execution and Development portfolios, typically ranging from approximately $500,000 to $10 million. For the Execution team, the work environment combines onsite and remote work, with approximately two days per week spent at client project sites in the Louisville, Kentucky area and three days per week working from home. Project sites and client headquarters are centrally located around downtown Louisville and surrounding areas. For the Development team, the position is primarily work-from-home with periodic travel to Louisville, Kentucky, typically monthly or once per quarter, with a preference for candidates within driving distance. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Louisville, KY.

The pay range for this position is $43.27 - $52.88/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
