Registered Nurse - Med/Surg

The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high quality compassionate care to patients and families. The RN assesses patient needs, develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates care delivery throughout the patient's episode. The Med/Surg RN develops specialized skills in the area of cardiac care, including telemetry monitoring. The RN is accountable for patient and family education to assist them in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization, including lifestyle changes to support health and healing. He/She promotes comfort and provides emotional support in a healing environment. The RN applies nursing knowledge and skill in the delivery of care by assessing patient and family needs through active listening, social perceptiveness, and analyzing data obtained through observation, assessment, technology, or communication. The RN creates a developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally relevant, individualized plan of care to address the nature and scope of the identified health problems. In collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and health care team members, the RN sets goals and monitors the patient's progress. The RN adjusts the plan based on patient response or changes in condition and reprioritization of needs. The RN promotes, advocates for, and protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient. He/She systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and uses the results of quality improvement activities to initiate changes in practice and influence care delivery. The RN engages in self-evaluation of practice, identifying strengths and areas for professional development. He/She takes accountability to increase knowledge and enhance skills. The RN uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. Demonstrated skill in the application of nursing interventions, including medication administration, is essential. The RN motivates the patient and family by teaching them what is needed to continue care and healing at home. He/She assesses the patient and family learning styles and structures educational sessions to maximize understanding. The RN seeks teachable moments during the care delivery process to emphasize pertinent information. He/She asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in the self-care process. The RN provides tools and information to assist the patient and family after discharge. He/She documents the education provided and the patient/family response. The RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to promote collaboration for the best patient outcomes. He/She teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with each individual's education, training, and scope of practice. The RN complies with infection prevention strategies and maintains competencies required for the specific population cared for. He/She reports potential safety risks and questionable practices. The RN promotes leadership awareness and fosters positive change. He/She conducts rounds per protocol and uses necessary tools and equipment to keep patients and families informed, engaged, and safe. Nursing practice reflects the importance of making meaningful connections with patients and families. The RN seeks to develop trusting and caring relationships by being present during interactions. He/She listens, communicates, engages, and anticipates the needs of patients and families. The RN strives to understand what is most important to patients and families, acknowledging them as the central focus of all care and services. He/She embraces creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice.
