Since every duty associated with this position may not be described herein, employees may be required to perform duties not specifically spelled out in the job description, but which may be reasonably considered to be incidental in the performing of their duties just as though they were actually written out in this job description.Line Maintenance TechnicianJob SummaryThe purpose of this position is to perform unskilled to semi-skilled work to clean and maintain sewer and storm water lines and collection systems.Essential Job FunctionsCleans and maintains sewer and storm water collection systems; performs confined space entries in manholes and wet wells; performs smoke and dye testing as needed; inspects and evaluates condition of systems; diagnoses problems; and cleans manholes and lines.Picks up and transports materials, tools and supplies; cleans and washes equipment and tools; performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on tools, equipment and vehicles; and notifies supervisor of needed equipment replacements and repairs.Operates combination truck; conducts pre-trip inspections including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; fuels trucks; loads and secures materials on trucks; travels to job sites; and conducts post-trip inspections.Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and wears protective gear.Receives and responds to work orders and service requests; completes and updates information in computer database; and maintains related documentation.Uses a variety of hand and power tools and equipment to perform assigned duties, including easement machine, push camera, root and tap cutter, two-way radio, confined space equipment, line locating unit, manhole pick, pry bar, sledgehammer, line cleaning nozzles, crescent and pipe wrench, probe rod, shovel, etc.Communicates with supervisor, City employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problemsOperates a personal computer, gas monitor, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, including the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.Additional FunctionsPerforms other related duties as requested, requested and assigned.Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience:Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; one (1) year of related experience in sewer and/or stormwater utility maintenance.Licenses or Certifications:Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the ability to attain tanker endorsement within six (6) months.Certification for confined space entry preferred.Special Requirements:None.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of cleaning and repairing of sewer, storm water lines, and collection systems.Knowledge of customer service principles.Knowledge of safety procedures applicable to job duties.Skill in gathering information before taking action.Skill in managing time.Skill in performing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; calculating decimals, percentages, and fraction; and interpreting graphs.Ability to build rapport.Ability to listen.Ability to follow established procedures.Ability to determine, calculate, tabulate, or summarize data/information.Ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well-established policies, procedures and standards.Ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and/or rapid adjustments.Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.Physical DemandsThe work is heavy work. The employee is constantly required to move objects applying up to 20 pounds of force; frequently required to apply 30 pounds of force to move objects; and occasionally required to exert up to 100 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally requires: balancing, climbing, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing voices and distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by the spoken word and shouting to be heard above ambient noise, visual acuity in data/color/observations/operating equipment/inspect defects or measurements, and walking.Work EnvironmentWork is performed outdoors where essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, unsafe structures, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, water hazards, disease, or rude/irate customers.
