Pay: $50,000 - $65,000 / year

• Provide leadership and oversight for all recreation department services and programming.
• Plan, organize, implement, and evaluate recreation programming designed to support student treatment goals.
• Supervise and provide leadership to Recreation Specialists and other recreation staff.
• Develop staffing schedules and complete administrative functions for the recreation department.
• Assess student recreation and leisure needs and develop individualized recreation opportunities.
• Plan and facilitate outdoor education programs, clubs, volunteer opportunities, community service experiences, and off-campus activities.
• Coordinate special events and therapeutic recreational experiences for students.
• Participate in clinical staffing meetings and interdisciplinary treatment planning discussions.
• Lead recreation department meetings and training activities.
• Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment during all recreation programming and community activities.
• Supervise ordering, inventory, maintenance, and distribution of recreation equipment and supplies.
• Manage and monitor the recreation department budget.
• Develop and maintain quarterly recreation activity calendars.
• Enhance the physical environment through program displays, bulletin boards, student projects, and facility-based recreation initiatives.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with community organizations and recreation partners.
• Complete assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, discharge plans, leisure education documentation, and discharge summaries.
• Monitor recreation staff compliance with documentation, charting requirements, and department procedures.
• Assist with professional relations activities and community outreach efforts.
• Develop, evaluate, revise, and maintain department manuals, policies, and procedures.
• Participate in quality assurance, risk management, program development, and human resource initiatives.
• Support program-wide leadership initiatives and organizational improvement efforts.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Executive Director.

Required Skills REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

• Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Recreation Therapy, or a related field required.
• Therapeutic Recreation or related clinical recreation training preferred.

Experience:

• Minimum of two years of experience in recreation, recreation therapy, outdoor education, or a related field required.
• Previous leadership or management experience preferred.
• Experience working with adolescents in therapeutic, educational, or behavioral health settings preferred.
• Experience supervising staff and managing recreation programming preferred.

Certifications & Training:

• Current CPR/AED certification required.
• Current First Aid certification required.
• Wilderness First Responder certification required.
• State licensure and/or national certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist preferred.
• Certifications and training in recreational, outdoor, and adventure-based activities preferred.
• Completion of required annual training related to special treatment procedures, risk management, and licensing requirements.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of recreation principles, practices, programming techniques, equipment, and safety standards.
• Ability to instruct, supervise, and actively participate in recreational and outdoor activities.
• Knowledge of adolescent behavioral health interventions and treatment approaches.
• Strong organizational, leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to supervise, motivate, and develop recreation staff.
• Ability to evaluate and modify activities to support student treatment goals and developmental needs.
• Knowledge of risk management practices and safety procedures related to recreation programming.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with clinical, educational, and residential teams.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

• Successful completion of required state background checks.
• Candidates are initially hired as Recreation Director Trainees and may not have student contact while state background checks are processing.
• Completion of assigned training requirements during the trainee period.
• Once the state background check is returned and cleared, the title transitions to Recreation Director and floor shadowing may begin.
• Verification of education, certifications, employment history, and other applicable credentials.

WORKING CONDITIONS/WORKING REQUIREMENTS
Physical Requirements:

• Ability to actively participate in recreational, outdoor, and experiential activities.
• Ability to stand, walk, hike, lift, carry, bend, reach, and transport recreation equipment as needed.
• Ability to safely supervise students during outdoor adventures, community activities, volunteer opportunities, and off-campus events.
• Ability to respond appropriately during emergencies, environmental hazards, and student behavioral situations.
• Ability to visually monitor students and maintain awareness of safety concerns in a variety of recreation settings.

Work Environment:

• Residential treatment center environment serving adolescents.
• Combination of office, campus, community-based, and outdoor environments.
• Frequent interaction with students, families, recreation staff, clinical teams, and community partners.
• Leadership role requiring flexibility, organization, creativity, risk management, and strong interpersonal skills.
• Regular involvement in outdoor education, volunteer programming, special events, and recreational activities.
