Zimmer Biomet is seeking a Mechanical Test Engineer Development to support R&D activities involving capital equipment, instruments, disposables, and related medical-device subsystems.

This is a hands-on engineering role that will work closely with R&D engineers to develop and refine prototypes, design and build test fixtures, develop test methods, execute engineering testing, maintain technical documentation, and provide practical feedback related to manufacturability, fit, function, tolerancing, and design robustness .

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with mechanical and electromechanical prototypes, engineering test fixtures, mechanical testing, CAD/drawings, GD&T, SolidWorks, metrology, prototype machining, and additive manufacturing . Experience within the medical device or another regulated industry is highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities Prototype Development & Testing

• Create, build, modify, troubleshoot, and test mechanical and electromechanical prototypes, assemblies, fixtures, and subsystems in support of product development.

• Support mechanical design iterations through prototype fabrication, assembly, fit checks, tolerance evaluation, and structured troubleshooting.

• Provide practical feedback related to design-for-manufacturability (DFM), fit, function, tolerance, and design robustness .

Test Fixture & Tooling Development

• Design and construct engineering test fixtures and development tooling using:

  • Machining

  • Additive manufacturing

  • Hand fabrication

  • Commercially available components

• Create and improve engineering fixtures and prototype build processes to support R&D activities.

Engineering Testing

• Set up and execute engineering tests for:

  • Design characterization

  • Design verification

  • Reliability testing

  • Process validation

• Accurately collect, analyze, and document test data, observations, and results.

• Assist engineers in developing and improving test methods.

• Support fixture definition, equipment selection, method repeatability, and establishment of clear acceptance criteria.

Mechanical Design & Documentation

• Read, interpret, and provide practical feedback on:

  • Mechanical drawings

  • CAD models

  • Engineering specifications

  • Tolerances

  • GD&T

  • Bills of Material (BOMs)

• Support creation, revision, and release of engineering documentation, including:

  • Drawings

  • Test methods

  • Test protocols

  • Test reports

  • Work instructions

  • Design records

Laboratory & Equipment Support

• Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain R&D laboratory equipment, measurement tools, prototype fabrication equipment, and mechanical test systems.

• Maintain an organized, safe, and compliant engineering laboratory.

• Perform dimensional and functional inspections of prototype components using appropriate metrology equipment and measurement tools .

• Identify and communicate deviations, anomalies, and opportunities for design improvement.

Project & Cross-Functional Support

• Coordinate prototype builds, test setups, equipment availability, and test execution to support project schedules and engineering priorities.

• Collaborate with Systems, Electrical, Software, Disposables, Operations, Quality, and supplier teams to resolve technical issues and support product-development deliverables.

• Follow approved procedures, test protocols, good documentation practices, and applicable quality-system requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Associate Degree, technical diploma, or certificate in:

  • Mechanical Engineering Technology

  • Manufacturing Engineering Technology

  • Electromechanical Technology

  • Machining

  • Or a related technical discipline

• Equivalent practical experience may be considered.

• 5+ years of relevant hands-on experience preferred , particularly as an Engineering Technician, Mechanical Technician, Prototype Technician, Test Technician, or similar technical role.

• Hands-on experience testing mechanical and electromechanical prototypes, assemblies, fixtures, and subsystems .

• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, CAD models, specifications, tolerances, GD&T, and BOMs.

• Experience with mechanical testing and measurement equipment .

• Experience in medical devices or another regulated industry with exposure to GMP, ISO, FDA, or comparable quality-system requirements.

• Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering and manufacturing teams.

Industry / Domain Experience

Preferred domain: Medical Device / MedTech

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a hands-on Mechanical Test Engineer, Engineering Technician, Prototype Technician, or Mechanical Technician with strong experience in mechanical/electromechanical prototype development and testing.

The candidate should be comfortable working directly with test fixtures, mechanical test equipment, CAD drawings, SolidWorks, GD&T, tolerance analysis, prototype machining, additive manufacturing, and dimensional inspection , preferably within a medical-device R&D or regulated manufacturing environment .
