Engineering Inspector 1

The purpose of this position is to perform daily inspections of public and private construction for the City to ensure accurate and timely installation. This is accomplished by ensuring all specifications and requirements have been met; reviewing plans and specifications; and coordinating activities between the contractor, other City departments, and other agencies. Other duties include serving as a primary source of contact between the City and the contractor, citizens, and other agencies; maintaining daily reports; and interacting with other City employees and citizens. Responsibilities Inspects workmanship, materials, and construction of private development and public works infrastructure including excavation, paving, roadways, bridges, drainage, water, sewer, and utility work to ensure compliance with all plans and specifications, and no damage to adjacent properties has occurred. Assures that specifications for street and utilities material testing requirements are met; and obtains water samples for quality in accordance with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements; monitors traffic control devices, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), and Trench Safety Systems; enforces regulations of Confined Space Entry and Rescue. Performs plan review and record keeping by reviewing plans and specifications with the Supervisor; attends pre-bid and pre-construction meetings; obtains quantities and estimates for City funded projects; reviews lab reports, water and core samples for accuracy and ensures conformance with existing codes, standards and specifications and in accordance with TCEQ and the EPA requirements; and maintains daily reports of work performed on the job and other events related to the projects. Coordinates activities between the project engineers. Receives general direction: The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. The employee may choose the appropriate procedure or policy. Performance is reviewed periodically. No responsibility for the direction or supervision of others. Work involves choices of action within limits set by standard practices and procedures. Professional judgment is required to apply the proper course of action. Qualifications Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency. Minimum of two years inspections of public and private construction including reviewing plans and specifications. Valid Texas Class C Driver's License. Intermediate - Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study. Intermediate - Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study. Intermediate - Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
