Internal Auditor

Position Summary Are you detail oriented, analytical and passionate about public service? The City of Hampton is seeking an Internal Auditor to safeguard our resources, ensure compliance, and promote efficiency throughout the city’s operations. The purpose of this class is to ensure the reliability and integrity of information, compliance with policies, plans, laws, and regulations; safeguard assets; and use resources effectively and efficiently. The applicant works independently, under the general supervision of the Internal Audit Manager, and reports major concerns or observations periodically throughout an audit engagement. Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a minimum of three years of full‑time equivalent auditing experience, preferably within a governmental unit, agency, or closely related setting. A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation required, or must be obtained within three years of employment. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria. Must successfully pass a background check and credit history check related to this position. Additional Requirements Effective communication with internal and external customers. Frequent travel between city departments and business partners within the city. Considerable use of personal and reliable transportation. Work may be performed outside standard business hours. May be considered “essential personnel” during city emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
