The mission of the Department of Elections (Department) is to provide equitable access to voting and election-related services and to conduct free, fair, and functional elections for the City and County of San Francisco. Job Description

In preparation for the November 3, 2026, Consolidated General Election, the Department is seeking applications for seasonal positions to join the District Support Team.

Under immediate supervision, employees in these positions perform driving, equipment delivery and retrieval, polling place support, and other basic election-related duties according to established Department procedures and instructions. On Election Day, District Support Team members are assigned predetermined routes covering polling places throughout San Francisco and assist with accessibility-related setup, equipment troubleshooting needs, and other operational needs at assigned polling places.

Employees may also be assigned to perform election-related work after Election Day. Post-election assignments may include ballot-processing and canvass-related activities occurring at City Hall and at the Warehouse.

In addition to the duties outlined in the 1402 Junior Clerk classification, employees in these positions may perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

1. Safely operate a City vehicle to travel between assigned polling places, Department facilities, and other designated locations throughout San Francisco.
2. Follow predetermined routes, schedules, work assignments, and established procedures while completing field assignments.
3. Deliver polling place equipment, accessibility supplies, election materials, and other assigned items to designated polling places and retrieve equipment and materials as directed.
4. Visit assigned polling places on Election Day and review polling place setups using Department-provided instructions, checklists, and accessibility requirements.
5. Install or adjust designated accessibility features, including signage, ramps, and other prescribed accessibility or hazard-mitigation materials, according to established procedures and instructions.
6. Observe assigned polling place setups and promptly report accessibility, equipment, supply, or other operational issues to the Department for further direction.
7. Use a smartphone or other Department-issued equipment to receive assignments, navigate to designated locations, document completed tasks, and communicate with the Department.
8. Load, unload, carry, organize, and distribute polling place equipment, election supplies, and other materials associated with assigned work.
9. Assist with post-election ballot-processing activities, including sorting, organizing, preparing, and handling ballots and election materials according to established procedures and instructions.
10. Assist with assigned canvass-related clerical and processing activities, including organizing, reviewing, counting, or tracking election materials and records according to established procedures.
11. Maintain routine records, checklists, counts, logs, and other basic documentation associated with assigned activities.
12. Perform other basic clerical, polling place support, ballot-processing, canvass, and election-related tasks as assigned based on operational needs.

Position Schedule, Requirements, and Work Location

Employees hired for this position may be offered assignments during different phases of the election cycle based on the Department's operational needs. The availability and duration of individual assignments may vary.

District Support and Election Day Assignment:

Employees selected for the District Support assignment will receive mandatory paid training prior to beginning field duties. Training will begin on October 23, 2026.

Prior to Election Day, employees may be assigned to drive City vehicles to deliver equipment, supplies, and other election materials to polling places throughout San Francisco.

On Election Day, November 3, 2026, employees will work an extended assignment that may be approximately 20 hours. Employees will drive a City vehicle to and from approximately 30 predetermined polling places within San Francisco and perform assigned polling place support duties according to Department procedures and instructions.

Post-Election Assignments:

Following Election Day, employees may be offered additional assignments assisting with ballot processing, canvass activities, equipment retrieval, and other post-election operations. The duration and schedule of post-election assignments will depend on the Department's operational needs.

Work locations will vary depending on assignment and may include polling places and other locations throughout San Francisco, the Department of Elections office at City Hall, and the Department's warehouse at Pier 31.

Work hours will vary significantly according to the demands of the election cycle and assigned work. Employees may work between 20 and 40 hours per week during certain periods and must be available to work flexible schedules, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, Election Day, and overtime, as required by operational needs. Overtime hours are paid at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate.

The position requires frequent driving and entry into and exit from an assigned vehicle; prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and walking; repetitive election-processing tasks; and the ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and move election equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

This is a temporary exempt as-needed position. Temporary exempt as-needed employees who have worked more than 1040 hours in any consecutive 12-month period, and whose normal work week at the time of inclusion in the system is not less than 20 hours are eligible for health coverage and retirement benefits. Position Salary: $29.55 per hour

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Six (6) months of clerical experience including preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact and processing of incoming and outgoing mail. Substitution:

Any one of the following may substitute for the required experience:

• Completion of 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university; OR
• Completion of a clerical training program (240 hours); OR
• Completion of an approved City and County of San Francisco Clerical Administrative training program.

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
• Ability to use, or learn how to use, a smart phone to track Election Day tasks
• Ability to safely drive and park a large vehicle (minivan or SUV) within City of San Francisco
