Overview A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and connecting readers with the right titles and products. You help maintain the attractive presentation of the store and ensure its efficient running. You help unpack and shelve deliveries and tidy displays. You work the registers in a quick and friendly manner, ensuring our customers receive a highly professional service. Location NC - Burlington - Burlington - 2285 Classification Part-Time Responsibilities Maintain reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts. Fill scheduling gaps when able, showing flexibility and responsiveness to the store’s needs (open from early mornings to late evenings every day, including weekends and most holidays). Be positive and willing in your approach to work, performing assigned tasks with purpose and energy, and working hard and reliably. Be supportive and considerate of colleagues, helping others on the team and showing kindness. Be cheerful with customers and consistently go out of your way to help them. Demonstrate aptitude and willingness to learn new skills and acquire new knowledge in the store. Enjoy being a bookseller and contribute to a collaborative team environment. Operational Competencies Using varied technology, including registers, computers, tablets, programs and other tools comfortably and efficiently. Developing strong merchandising skills to maintain book presentation and store cleanliness. Developing effective visual merchandising to maintain presentation across categories such as gifting, toys, and other products. Running a register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably. Supporting the receiving and unpacking of deliveries and the subsequent shelving. Finding books and other products with accuracy using knowledge, colleagues, BookMaster, and available information tools. Supporting the café team willingly and effectively when needed. Understanding loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques, identifying theft, and seeking support for problematic behavior in the store. All this work requires physical activity including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and a lot of walking. You may work in other stores if needed to support the wider cluster. Career Development As you gain experience, your bookselling knowledge and skills will develop. You will increase your contribution as you develop expertise. You will: Build book knowledge across fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books. Use knowledge to maintain sections and present books in an attractive way. Make effective book recommendations to customers across varied sections. Learn how to sell books in a positive way aligned with sales objectives (e.g., Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, preorders) and share this knowledge with customers and colleagues. Build knowledge in Educational Toys and Games, Specialty Games, Hobby and Collectibles, music and movies, and Newsstand, expanding knowledge across the store. Use knowledge to maintain all sections and backstock and to assist customers with shopping. Leverage knowledge to support sales objectives, products, and new releases. Progression As you develop mastery of the skills outlined, you are expected to advance toward the next career step — Senior Bookseller — with new challenges and opportunities for growth.
