MECHANIC

Requirements

PURPOSE : Under the direction of the Master Mechanic the mechanic performs skilled work in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of automotive and heavy equipment such as bulldozers and motor graders and specialized police and fire vehicles. The employee performs difficult repairs to complex equipment such as overhauling gasoline or diesel engines and making major modifications; may also perform less difficult repairs to automotive equipment such as tuning engines, repairing brakes, adjusting transmissions, and other routine maintenance. Work may be performed in the field or in the repair shop.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Troubleshoots brake systems; relines hydraulic brakes, replaces worn or broken brake lines, replaces master cylinder, adjusts brakes, adds fluids, bleeds brake systems, replaces air brake's boosters, valves, and shoes. Removes and replaces brake pads, repairs brake lights, checks bearings, seal and hub, checks for leaks in cylinders, greases seals, removes rotors, repacks back and front wheel bearings, and puts brakes through road test. Performs tune-ups on Police Department and Fire Department vehicles as required. Repairs emission controls, carburetors, fuel injection systems, and steering systems. Performs electrical repairs, air conditioner repairs, exhaust and fuel pump repairs. Troubleshoots major and minor engine defects as well as engine cooling system malfunctions. Works on transmissions, rear-ends and axles. Converts vehicles to police package. Identifies problem and removes engine if necessary. Repairs the heads, pistons, rings, bearings, crank shaft or other parts of engine which might be defective. Repairs small engines such as lawnmowers, chain-saws, metal saws, weedeaters, concrete saws, air compressors and generators. Troubleshoots electrical systems. Rebuilds and repairs brakes. Replaces electrical valves, replaces electrical switches repairs shortages, replaces fuses, flashers, and wires. Checks battery and alternator, voltage regulator, installs lights, and connects trailers wire pig tail to truck and trailer. Installs and repairs radios. Prepare works orders for maintenance to be performed on heavy trucks. Performs differential and drive shaft repairs. Replaces gaskets, clutch, flywheel, exhaust and harness wiring. Makes suggestions concerning repairs to be conducted. Performs clutch repair, radiator repair. Tows vehicles to garage when needed, this include trucks, cars, tractors, and other equipment. Make repairs on site if possible. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, of brakes, transmission, tune-ups and engine repairs, of heavy equipment, engine overhauls, wheels balance, and clutches on tractors and trucks. Knowledge of electrical wiring systems, of mechanical terminology. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor and other employees. Writing skills to fill out reports and complete work orders. Reading comprehension skills to understand work orders and technical manuals. Ability to work with other, to detect mechanical problems visually and audibly, to move 50 pounds parts, components or equipment. Ability to drive a vehicle, to torque bolts, to make repairs and preform maintenance on heavy equipment, trucks, and automobiles. Ability to instruct other employees in methods and procedures. Ability to climb on or crawl under equipment during course of repairs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possess a valid Alabama driver's license. Experience in auto repair. Must be able to be certified within one (1) year of employment to repair A/C systems and other federal required certificates for equipment repairs. Must have knowledge of welding.
