BMS Resident Engineer

On-Site Resident Engineer Position | Location: Warren/Milford, MI

Position Overview#

We are seeking a hands-on BMS Resident Engineer to serve as the on-site technical lead supporting Battery Management System (BMS) development and validation activities at the Warren/Milford Technical Center. This role acts as the critical interface between Customer, suppliers, and offshore engineering teams, driving Engineering Changes, defect resolution, and validation readiness through to production milestones.

Key Responsibilities#

● Serve as the onsite resident engineer supporting BMS development and validation activities at the customer Warren/Milford Technical Center.

● Provide onsite engineering support for Engineering Changes (ECs), including software upgrades, configuration updates, and release verification.

● Investigate, reproduce, and track BMS software and hardware issues; create detailed defect reports and drive issues through resolution.

● Coordinate issue management between customer, suppliers, and offshore engineering teams to ensure timely resolution of technical issues.

● Support vehicle integration, bench testing, and validation activities for new software releases.

● Collect, analyze, and interpret system logs, CAN/CAN FD traces, and diagnostic data to support root cause analysis.

● Perform software flashing, deployment, and verification on development vehicles, HIL systems, and bench test environments.

● Participate in technical reviews and engineering meetings with customer, providing regular status updates on Engineering Changes, validation progress, and open issues.

● Validate software fixes and confirm issue closure prior to production or release milestones.

● Maintain engineering documentation, issue tracking databases, change records, and validation reports in accordance with project processes.

● Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software, hardware, validation, and systems engineers, to ensure successful BMS integration and release readiness.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education#

● Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Automotive Engineering or a related field.

Experience#

● 3+ years of experience in automotive ECU development, validation, or field/on-site technical support.

● Prior experience with Battery Management Systems (BMS) or high-voltage electrical systems strongly preferred.

● Prior experience as an on-site resident engineer supporting an OEM strongly preferred.

Technical Skills

● Proficiency with CAN and CAN FD communication protocols and associated diagnostic tools (e.g., CANoe, CANalyzer, Vector toolchain).

● Hands-on experience with software flashing/calibration, HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) test environments, and bench test procedures.

● Familiarity with vehicle diagnostic standards (UDS, OBD) and embedded software debugging techniques.

● Strong data/log analysis skills with the ability to perform system-level root cause analysis.

● Working knowledge of Engineering Change management processes (EC/ECR/ECN) and issue-tracking tools (e.g., JIRA, DOORS, PTC Windchill) preferred.

Soft Skills#

● Excellent cross-functional communication and coordination skills, able to interface effectively with customer, suppliers, and offshore teams.

● Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to independently drive issues to closure.

● Bilingual proficiency in English and Mandarin Chinese (reading, writing, and speaking) is required.

● Highly self-motivated and reliable, comfortable working in an on-site, resident-engineer capacity.

Additional Requirements

● Ability to work on-site full-time at the customer Warren/Milford Technical Center.

● Flexibility to travel occasionally to support additional test/validation sites as needed.
