Description
Starting salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's education, relevant experience, and demonstrated qualifications, in accordance with the College's approved salary plan and established salary range for the position.

The Executive Director of Information Technology provides executive leadership, strategic planning, and administrative oversight for the College's information technology operations and services. This position is responsible for directing the development, implementation, security, maintenance, and continuous improvement of institutional technology systems, infrastructure, enterprise applications, cybersecurity operations, instructional technology, and technical support services in support of the College's mission and strategic priorities.

The Executive Director leads institution-wide technology initiatives; develops and implements technology policies, procedures, standards, and long-range planning strategies; and ensures reliable, secure, and efficient technology operations across the College. The position collaborates with executive leadership, faculty, staff, governmental agencies, vendors, and external partners to support innovation, operational effectiveness, regulatory compliance, data security, and digital transformation initiatives.

The Executive Director also provides leadership for technology budgeting, project management, disaster recovery planning, risk mitigation, and IT governance while serving as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on emerging technologies, cybersecurity preparedness, and institutional technology advancement. This position leads and supervises the Information Technology department, serves as a member of the President's Extended Leadership Team, and reports to the Vice President of Institutional Research, Planning, Effectiveness, and Technology (VP-IRPET).

Examples of Duties

Leadership, Administration, and Strategic Planning
  • Provide executive leadership and administrative oversight for institutional information technology operations, services, personnel, and resources.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate strategic technology goals, policies, procedures, standards, and long-range planning initiatives aligned with institutional priorities.
  • Lead the planning, prioritization, coordination, and oversight of enterprise technology projects and institutional technology initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain Information Technology Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery, and operational resilience plans.
  • Oversee departmental budgeting, resource allocation, procurement planning, and fiscal stewardship of technology operations.
  • Monitor and improve IT service delivery effectiveness, operational efficiency, and customer support functions.
  • Provide executive oversight for help desk operations, escalation processes, and resolution of critical service interruptions or technology incidents.
  • Supervise, evaluate, mentor, and support Information Technology personnel.
  • Serve as liaison with executive leadership, the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), Information Technology Services (ITS), NCREN, governmental agencies, and external technology partners.
  • Chair or support institutional technology governance committees and maintain oversight of institutional IT policies and standards.
  • Participate in executive leadership meetings, strategic planning initiatives, and institutional decision-making processes.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to executive leadership regarding cybersecurity, digital transformation, emerging technologies, institutional technology risk, and long-term technology planning.
  • Provide executive oversight for vendor evaluation, contract review, service agreements, and vendor performance management.
Systems, Infrastructure, and Technology Operations
  • Provide oversight for institutional technology infrastructure, enterprise systems, network operations, cloud services, instructional technology platforms, audiovisual systems, and cybersecurity operations.
  • Lead enterprise system upgrades, migrations, integrations, and modernization initiatives.
  • Collaborate with academic and administrative departments to support instructional technologies, institutional operations, and enterprise service delivery.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend technology solutions that improve institutional effectiveness, operational efficiency, and security posture.
  • Provide executive-level guidance and escalation support for complex systems issues, integrations, and operational concerns.
Cybersecurity, Compliance, Grants, and Risk Management
  • Provide oversight for institutional cybersecurity strategy, compliance efforts, risk management, and data protection initiatives in coordination with IT personnel and institutional leadership.
  • Support compliance with applicable federal, state, accreditation, and regulatory requirements related to information technology, cybersecurity, accessibility, privacy, and data security.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness planning, institutional continuity exercises, and incident response coordination.
  • Oversee management and administration of technology-related grants, including SLCGP and other funding opportunities, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and compliance requirements.
  • Support institutional technology governance, accountability, and operational risk mitigation efforts.
Institutional Collaboration and Support
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders to support technology initiatives and institutional effectiveness.
  • Participate in institutional committees, professional organizations, training opportunities, and collaborative initiatives related to information technology and higher education.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, professional development, and retention initiatives for Information Technology personnel.
  • Maintain a professional, service-oriented, and collaborative operational environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience in information technology, including experience in enterprise systems, infrastructure oversight, cybersecurity, or technology services administration.
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory or administrative leadership experience.
Preferred
  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience working in higher education, preferably within a community college environment.
  • Experience with technology governance, institutional policy development, or committee leadership.
  • Experience managing enterprise technology environments, including cloud services, enterprise systems, cybersecurity frameworks, and instructional technologies.
  • Experience managing technology vendors, contracts, and service agreements.
  • Experience supporting regulatory compliance efforts related to information technology, including GLBA, FERPA, accessibility, privacy, and cybersecurity requirements.
  • Experience leading cross-functional institutional technology initiatives involving academic, administrative, and technical stakeholders.
