Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional who coordinates patient care delivery by the healthcare team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient and identifies nursing diagnoses based on responses to health problems. The RN develops and implements an individualized plan of care and evaluates the patient's response. The RN promotes safe passage for patients by using knowledge of patient needs and the healthcare environment. The RN assists patients to transition through the healthcare encounter without preventable complications or delays. The RN delegates interventions to healthcare personnel based on the Nursing Practice Act, each patient's condition, and the competencies of the employee. This role is utilized for RNs in hospital inpatient and outpatient departments with 24X7 staffing. Examples include inpatient and outpatient procedural areas such as GI Lab, Pain Management, Dialysis, Infusion Centers, and IV Services.

Essential Functions of the Role: Using clinical reasoning, the RN conducts accurate clinical assessments according to practice standards. The RN identifies and prioritizes patient and family needs. The RN develops, implements, and evaluates the nursing plan of care and modifies the plan to meet clinical outcomes. The RN systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice. The RN supports evidence-based practice changes through research utilization and experiential learning. The RN participates in quality and performance improvement initiatives. The RN creates a compassionate, supportive, safe, and therapeutic environment for patients and families. The RN develops therapeutic relationships with patients and families while maintaining appropriate boundaries. The RN manages both emotional and physical pain to promote comfort and healing and prevent unnecessary suffering. The RN recognizes, appreciates, and incorporates patients' and families' unique differences into an individualized plan of care. The RN preserves and protects the confidentiality, autonomy, dignity, and rights of patients and families. The RN creates an individualized plan that reflects patient and family values and goals. The RN facilitates learning for patients, families, nursing staff, and the healthcare team. The RN integrates appropriate education throughout the continuum of care. The RN assesses and documents learning needs and outcomes. The RN collaborates with colleagues and the community to develop and implement an integrated plan of care. The RN is open and sensitive to all team members' unique contributions. The RN delegates tasks and care to appropriate staff and ensures timely follow-up. The RN uses strategies and available resources for problem-solving for patients, families, and staff. The RN recognizes that resources are limited and considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, and efficiency in planning and delivering patient care. The RN contributes to improving nursing practice and the work environment through participation in shared governance. The RN participates in the staffing process from education and planning to evaluation. The RN identifies personal goals and commits to ongoing professional growth through various avenues.
