This Phlebotomist II role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections while working independently in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. You support daily operations by collecting, processing, and preparing specimens for testing, troubleshooting issues, training others as needed, and recommending workflow improvements. You provide clear, courteous explanations to patients, ensure accurate specimen handling and documentation, and maintain strict compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities- Perform venipuncture and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal specimens, using straight and butterfly needles as appropriate.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, ensuring proper containers, labeling, and handling procedures are followed.
- Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes in accordance with protocol.
- Perform specimen processing, including centrifugation and preparation for testing, while maintaining chain-of-custody and documentation standards.
- Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support safe and efficient laboratory operations.
- Troubleshoot issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency.
- Attend required annual department trainings and remain current on procedures, policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results when appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional manner.
- Provide excellent patient service while maintaining quality, safety, and compliance standards.
- Manage and coordinate specimen drop-offs for the site, ensuring timely and accurate handling.
- Work independently as the sole phlebotomist at the site, managing daily workload and priorities without direct on-site supervision.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- At least 2 years of phlebotomy experience, with the ability to work independently as the sole phlebotomist at the site.
- Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
- Strong experience in blood drawing and specimen collection for various test types.
- Proficiency in specimen processing, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and preparing specimens for testing.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify patient and test information.
- Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety practices.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation, communication, and reporting tasks.
- High School Diploma or GED, with 2–4 years of relevant experience.
- Ability to provide clear, courteous communication to patients and healthcare staff.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in labeling, documentation, and handling of specimens.
- Phlebotomist certification (such as CPT) and phlebotomy-certified credentials.
- Experience in a medical or clinical laboratory environment handling a variety of specimen types.
- Familiarity with laboratory workflows and the ability to make recommendations for process improvements.
- Experience managing and coordinating specimen drop-offs and logistics for a client site.
- Strong customer service orientation with a focus on patient care and satisfaction.
- Ability to read and relay laboratory results accurately when responding to inquiries.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training and learning opportunities to enhance skills and advance within the organization.
- Comfort working as the primary phlebotomy resource on site, including handling questions and troubleshooting independently.
This role is based in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where you serve as the sole phlebotomist at the site. The typical schedule includes Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. You work with standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, specimen containers, and computer systems for labeling and documentation. The environment emphasizes safety, quality, and regulatory compliance, with adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations. You participate in annual department trainings and have access to advancement and learning opportunities throughout the organization.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $22.00 - $23.00/hr.
