Position Summary

The Animal Technician supports the care and well-being of laboratory animals used in biomedical research. This role is responsible for daily animal care, sanitation of animal housing areas, health monitoring, record keeping, equipment maintenance, and animal husbandry in accordance with established procedures, applicable regulations, and LARC standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide daily care and monitoring of laboratory animals, including rodents and other assigned species.
• Change cages and racks and maintain clean, sanitary animal housing areas.
• Provide food and water according to established procedures.
• Monitor animal health and promptly identify and report health concerns.
• Maintain animal rooms, equipment, and housing areas according to SOPs and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain accurate records, including animal health, feeding, temperature/humidity, receipt, disposition, and per-diem logs.
• Perform cage washing, sanitation, disinfection, and sterilization procedures.
• Operate cage washers and autoclaves as required.
• Perform basic technical procedures to support laboratory research activities.
• Communicate animal health and facility concerns to veterinary staff, researchers, supervisors, and compliance personnel.
• Use computers, email, barcode scanners, PDAs, electronic health surveillance systems, online training, and electronic timesheets.
• Follow federal, state, institutional, and animal-care regulations and established safety procedures.
• Work independently or as part of a team and follow assigned instructions.
• Identify problems, take appropriate corrective action, and report issues promptly.

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED.
• Minimum 1 year of animal handling or laboratory animal sanitation/equipment operations experience .
• Knowledge of basic animal care, feeding, caging, and space requirements.
• Knowledge of sanitation, disinfection, and cleaning procedures.
• Ability to recognize and report animal health concerns.
• Basic computer and email skills.
• Ability to maintain accurate and legible records.
• Ability to follow instructions and work independently or collaboratively.
• Ability to work safely with required PPE.

Education & Experience

Candidates should meet one of the following:

• High school/GED plus completion of training equivalent to an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification and 1 year of animal care experience ; or
• High school/GED plus 2 years of animal care experience with an appropriate animal species; or
• Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
