Train Operator Position

Train Operators are expected to operate the Train safely and efficiently on a daily basis. This includes taking tickets, driving the train, and memorizing a speech that is read during the duration of the ride. Train Operators will be considered Guest Services Part-Time Staff and the position will have some overlap with other Guest Services positions when needed. All positions are expected to have basic knowledge of the operations and events on a day-to-day basis to assist guests with any questions and ensure a memorable visit.

The train is closed during the winter. When the train closes, this position turns into a Guest Services Part-Time employee until the train reopens in the spring.

Reports directly to the Guest Services Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Operate the Train safely by giving safety speeches at the beginning and end of each ride and watching the riders to ensure they're following rules
2. Operate the Train efficiently in order to keep lines moving without sacrificing the quality of the ride
3. Produce high-quality guest interactions with all guests at the zoo.
4. Provide general information about the Zoo on a day-to-day basis.
5. Have knowledge of prohibited items.
6. Assist guests who are inquiring about our membership program.
7. Have knowledge of the rules and policies of the Train and Carousel.
8. Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
9. Maintain a positive attitude.
10. Other tasks as assigned by Team Leads and Supervisors.
11. Commitment to the zoo's mission and conservation efforts.
12. Ability to work overtime as needed.
13. Maintains strict confidentiality.

Other Possible Duties

1. Assist guests when they purchase tickets for admission and rides and ensure guests get the best option for their needs
2. Sell admission and upsell ride and animal feeding tickets to guests at the front entrance and inside the Zoo
3. Scan admission tickets and memberships for guests entering the Zoo.
4. Assist with Field Trips to make sure they do not overcrowd the entry plaza
5. Assist with Field Trips by checking paperwork, counting student and chaperone numbers, and ensuring everyone knows and follows policies and procedures
6. Assist with the parking of School Buses

Required Experience

No education or experience is required, but previous cash handling, customer service, or other related experience may be preferred.

Train Operators must have a valid Driver's License.

Work Environment

Train Operators are expected to work outside in the conditions for up to 8 hours at a time. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity is required to perform essential functions. May require lifting of up to 30 lbs.
