Job Description

Schedule: - 6.5 hours per day, including a 0.5-hour unpaid lunch break - All days when school is in session | Please refer to the School Calendar linked here. Hourly Rate: $21.23 - $23.83 [based on experience] Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist students academically in all settings on a daily basis.
  2. Assist students with all daily living activities including but not limited to: mobility, feeding, toileting, hygiene, and lifting students during transfers and repositioning as necessary.
  3. Provide escort and physical assistance to students as necessary.
  4. Assist students with transitioning on and off the school bus upon arrival and dismissal.
  5. Help maintain individual records for students inclusive of completed Medicaid documentation.
  6. Guide students in developing positive relationships with peers and adults.
  7. Assist with the supervision of students during student free time.
  8. Assist teachers in maintaining work and study areas.
  9. Collect and display suitable material for educational displays.
  10. Under the direction of the assigned teacher(s), develop learning materials and group lessons; adapt learning materials to meet the needs of individuals with different ability levels, learning styles, or cultural/linguistic backgrounds; and correct and prescribe students' work to remediate students' weaknesses.
  11. Attend meetings to help organize programs of instruction and discuss problematic students and situations.
  12. Participate in discipline procedures and prescribe consequences for student behavior, with supervision.
  13. Utilize de-escalation techniques acquired from the District-approved training to assist students when met with a challenge by physical needs such as outbursts, running, etc.
  14. Work with students in the community to assist with transition goals as necessary.
  15. Maintain a cooperative working relationship with all personnel, agencies and community partners.
  16. Assist teachers as a member of the Instructional Team in developing and using appropriate strategies and techniques (develop materials and provide group lessons).
  17. Assist teachers in devising special strategies for reinforcing positive behavior based upon a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  18. Serve as the chief source of information to help any substitute teacher assigned on any given day.
  19. Monitor and respond to District-related email communications.
  20. Complete mandatory trainings as assigned through the District's Learning Management System (LMS) in a timely manner.
  21. Other related duties as assigned by classroom teachers, school Principal and/or the Director of Student Services and/or his/her designee(s).

Job Requirements

  • A sympathetic understanding for students who are differently abled.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment in resolving problems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to create positive relationships and work collaboratively.
  • Strong oral, organizational and written skills with an excellent attention to detail.
  • Documented experience and/or training with students who are differently abled.
  • Ability to assist students when met with a challenge by physical needs, such as outbursts, running, etc.
  • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma.
  • Obtain/maintain appropriate de-escalation District approved training/certification. Those not certified are required to attend the next available District-provided training.
  • Meet the minimum requirements set to be a Paraprofessional by the Rhode Island Department of Education.
  • College level training in education/childcare, preferred.
  • Experience with non-verbal cueing, preferred.
  • Completion of a successful interview.
