Staff Psychologist

Summary Position is for a Staff Psychologist within the Health Psychology Program. Preferred experience includes background in working with patients experiencing comorbid medical and mental health conditions, experience with health psychology interventions (e.g., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain), and health‑related psychological assessments (e.g., pre‑procedural mental health evaluations). VA Careers - Mental Health Professionals: Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements Citizenship – Citizen of the United States Licensure – Applicants must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia. Exception: Non‑licensed applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements may be given a temporary appointment as a "graduate psychologist" at the GS‑11 or GS‑12 grade under authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405[(c)(2)(B)] for a period not to exceed two years from the date of employment on the condition that such a psychologist provide care only under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. Failure to obtain licensure within that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. Education – Applicant must have a doctoral degree in psychology from an APA accredited graduate program, or an equivalent recognized by the Canadian Psychological Association, or a program that has successfully completed a re‑specialization program accredited by APA or CPA. Applicants must have a specialty area consistent with the assignment. Internship – Applicants must have successfully completed a professional psychology internship accredited by APA or CPA, or an acceptable VHA internship program, or be board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology for those with older degrees. Preferred Experience – Qualified applicants should hold a valid license to practice psychology issued by a state or territory licensing board. Grade Determinations GS‑11 – No experience beyond basic requirements. GS‑12 – At least 1 year of professional psychologist experience equivalent to GS‑11 level and demonstrated KSAs: knowledge of treatments/assessments, ability to design treatments, incorporate new procedures, conduct research activities, perform basic research tasks. GS‑13 – At least 2 years of professional psychologist experience, including at least one year at GS‑12 level, with additional KSAs: professional advice & consultation, knowledge of clinical research literature. Assignments Staff psychologists diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through various modalities, provide adjunctive interventions for medical disorders, and may conduct research. They may be assigned to any VHA program and setting (inpatient, outpatient, primary care, surgery, mental health, neurology, rehabilitation medicine, geriatric, etc.). At higher levels, psychologists are licensed to practice independently and consult with peers and supervisors. Duties Clinical Responsibilities (75‑90 % of time): Provide psychotherapeutic interventions (individual, group, and telemental health), perform intake assessments and treatment planning, conduct assessments (psychodiagnostic, neuropsychological, pre‑procedural), maintain assessment competencies, document findings, complete consults, and conduct suicide risk screenings. Academic/Teaching/Training (0‑10 %): Provide training and supervision to postdoctoral fellows, interns, practicum students, and other health trainees; serve as consultant to staff and trainees; participate in training committees. Administrative/Program Evaluation/Outcome Measurement/Research (5‑10 %): Involve in research activities, writing scholarly articles, serving on research committees, comply with performance measures, documentation procedures, and program monitoring. Other Significant Responsibilities (5 %): Serve on VA committees, assist in RFPs and grant proposals, attend required meetings, complete assigned training.
