School Resource Officer

Purpose Of Classification The SRO program is designed to provide school administrators and staff with law enforcement resources and expertise to maintain safety and order in the school environment. The program is also intended to reduce juvenile delinquency and promote positive behavior from students, as well as provide delinquency prevention, mentoring and a positive role model to students. Pay is based on an eighty (80) hour bi‑weekly pay cycle. Bi‑weekly pay cycle classification may change based on any new duty assignments. City of Orangeburg, South Carolina City of Orangeburg, South Carolina Classification Specification PUBLIC SAFETY SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER Grade: 9-10 Minimum Pay: $50,396-$54,500 This is a Grant‑Funded position Essential Functions Address crime and disorder problems, drug activities, gangs, violence, and other activities that adversely affect the proper learning environment of their assigned school. Assist in the investigation of crimes committed by any person(s) within their school. Work closely with the school department and other agencies needing assistance with student. Educate students on gang resistance education, alcohol, drug and tobacco awareness, crime prevention, safety conflict resolution and mediation and the law enforcement profession. Offer information to Department members about school crime and delinquency problems; provide security at school events. Provides on‑site emergency response to safety threats or disasters and monitor the school social environment to identify emerging youth criminal activity and gangs. The SRO will operate in cooperation with school staff but shall not interfere in school matters. School authorities should handle infractions of school rules and policies. The SRO is encouraged to attend school social and sporting events, school council and PTO meetings as resources allow. Required Abilities Perform a wide range of law enforcement assignments. Understand, interpret, apply, enforce, and make decisions in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local policies and regulations. Interpret and explain City law enforcement policies and procedures; think clearly and act quickly in a variety of situations; judge situations/people accurately. Effectively use and qualify with law enforcement tools and weapons including firearms, batons, defensive tactics, and safety equipment. Operate specialized law enforcement equipment including specialized police vehicles, radios, video, and other equipment. Prepare clear and concise reports and routine correspondence. Maintain contact and preserve good relations with the public; respond to requests and inquiries from the public. May operate a department‑issued computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e‑mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions. May operate or use various equipment associated with law enforcement in order to complete work assignments; operate and maintain police vehicles, firearms, electronic control devices, and law enforcement tools and equipment. Communicate with supervisors, other employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Additional Functions Performs other related duties as required. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is also frequently required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or GED required; associate degree in criminal justice or a related field preferred; vocational or technical training in criminal justice or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Specific License or Certification Required Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver’s license. Must possess and maintain a South Carolina Police Officer Class I certification. Must possess and maintain a School Resource Officer certification. Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position. Other All internal candidates must have been in current role for minimum six (6) months and be currently performing satisfactorily in duties to apply.
