Assistant General Counsel - Litigation (Irving)

Job Summary

Caterpillar Inc. seeks an experienced attorney to serve as Assistant General Counsel – Litigation in its In‑House Legal Services Division. The role provides legal support on highly complex litigation and investigations, including intellectual property, commercial disputes, insurance disputes, and government investigations.

What You Will Do

• Provide day‑to‑day legal counseling on complex litigation and investigative matters, including patent and other intellectual property litigation, high‑exposure insurance disputes, and complex investigations.
• Draft, review, and monitor pleadings, briefs, discovery, subpoenas, investigative demands, and related responses.
• Manage complex eDiscovery workflows, legal holds, data preservation, document review, and production issues involving high volumes of data.
• Work with paralegals and witnesses to develop cases for trial.
• Counsel business clients on litigation risks and provide training as needed.
• Collaborate with insurers, risk management personnel, and accounting teams on insurance coverage and case reserves.
• Lead multidisciplinary teams of attorneys and work with outside counsel to develop case strategy for complex litigation and investigation matters.
• Maintain excellent relationships with outside counsel and support the Caterpillar litigation program.

What You Have

• J.D. from an accredited law school and strong academic credentials.
• Membership in the State Bar of any U.S. State and qualification for admission as in‑house counsel under Illinois Rule 716 (if not admitted in Illinois).
• Minimum 8–12 years of active litigation experience, including roles in litigated cases and management of high‑exposure litigation matters.
• Familiarity with complex eDiscovery and high‑volume data issues, legal holds, preservation, collection, review workflows, and production.
• Experience in patent and other intellectual property litigation, complex government investigations, and large‑scale discovery or data‑intensive matters.
• In‑house litigation experience and success in complex, data‑intensive litigation.
• Superior research, writing, communication, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
• Self‑starter approach with the ability to handle cases independently and work effectively with outside counsel.

Location & Travel

• Locations: Irving, TX or Peoria, IL.
• On‑site role performed from the office five days per week.
• Travel is required; frequency varies with the attorney’s docket.
• Domestic relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.
