Position Overview The Acute Care Trauma Surgery service at UVA Health's University Medical Center, a Level I Adult Trauma Center, is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join a multidisciplinary team caring for complex trauma patients across the inpatient acute care and outpatient continuum. This full‑time position (1.0 FTE; 40 hours/week) is approximately 90% inpatient clinical responsibilities and 10% outpatient trauma clinic coverage. Key Responsibilities Provide comprehensive evaluation and management of hospitalized trauma surgery patients, participate in daily rounds, coordinate multidisciplinary care, and manage acute clinical issues. Facilitate complex discharge planning, ensure adherence to trauma care pathways, and support post‑discharge follow‑up in the weekly trauma clinic. Maintain clinical coverage within established service schedule (0600–1830, approximately 13 shifts per month per APP). Document clinical care, treatment plans, procedures, and transitions of care in the electronic health record in accordance with regulatory, billing, and departmental requirements. Coordinate with trauma surgeons, consulting services, nursing, case management, rehabilitation, and ancillary teams to support efficient patient flow and continuity of care. Participate in departmental operational workflows, quality initiatives, and clinical program development as needed. Assist in day‑to‑day service needs on the trauma surgery team and provide guidance and informal training to lower‑level staff, new team members, and learners. Collaborate with department leadership and physician partners to promote efficient care delivery, service consistency, and high‑quality patient outcomes. Identify operational or clinical issues that are not routine, analyze contributing factors, and support problem‑solving within the care team. Qualifications Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master’s degree. Required license as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in Virginia; additional licensure may be required (RN practice for NP). Must maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System and appropriate state boards. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required; PALS/NRP and ACLS as applicable. Prior experience (1–2 years) in trauma surgery, acute care surgery, or a related surgical specialty is preferred. Certification as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG‑ACNP) preferred for NP candidates. Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to communicate clearly and professionally with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and other care team members. Ability to manage complex clinical situations with sound judgment, organization, and adaptability in a high‑acuity environment. Background checks and pre‑employment health screenings will be conducted; drug screen required for all new hires. Physical Demands The job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequent bending/stooping, reaching overhead, and repetitive computer keyboard use. The role involves attention to detail, legible writing, and lifting/pushing/pulling 50–100 lbs. Exposure to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids, and infectious disease may occur. Compensation The starting base rate is $124,845.00 annually.
