Licensed Practical Nurse

The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for the performance of basic nursing duties. This includes execution of physician orders and operation of pill call. The nurse will assist the physician in examinations and treatments. Technical and clinical procedures will be performed within the scope of the license. The nurse will attend sick call with the physician to see patients. Preparation of a list of patients to be examined is required. The examining room and equipment must be prepared in advance. Medication will be dispensed during pill call, with documentation as required. The nurse is expected to control medication, syringes, and other medical supplies. Emergency procedures will be performed as needed. The nurse must keep equipment and the work area clean. Sanitation methods should be utilized appropriately. Documentation and reporting of activities must align with established policies. Responsibilities include assisting the supervisor in evaluating medical services. Maintaining security and confidentiality of all medical records is mandatory. Observation and recording of patient behavior are essential duties. The medical unit must be inspected for items that could be used as contraband. Secure storage or safe disposal of supplies and equipment is required. Preparation and maintenance of records, reports and logs must adhere to standards. Medical and technical procedures as well as governmental regulations must be comprehended and interpreted. The nurse may need to respond to lawsuits and attend court hearings, if necessary. Effective communication with administration, staff, patients, visitors, and the public is required. Evaluation and recommendation of physical safety requirements for a safe working environment are crucial. Facilitation of accreditation of the medical program may be needed. Preparation and dissemination of safety and accident reports is part of the role. The nurse will coordinate the movement of patients to and from medical treatment areas. Initiation and completion of investigations and inquiries as directed will be part of responsibilities. The nurse will work in confined areas and check security of doors and windows regularly. Awareness of potential verbal abuse in a challenging environment is important. Engagement in functions in confined areas requires flexibility and independent judgment.
