About The Department Neurosurgeons at UChicago Medicine are devoted to patient care, research, and teaching. This department offers the full spectrum of neurosurgical services for children and adults with brain diseases, including aggressive brain tumors, spinal degenerative diseases, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke. Department BSD NSU – Clinical Providers Job Summary As an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in Neurological Surgery, you will manage comprehensive direct patient care, including assessment, intervention, planning, and evaluation. You will exercise autonomous decision‑making in diagnosing and initiating delegated medical treatments, and you will handle inpatient and outpatient assessments, bedside and operating room procedures, family support, discharge planning, and patient education. The position will primarily be deployed at UChicago Medicine – Main Campus in Hyde Park, with potential off‑site deployments in the future. Responsibilities Round and provide clinical care for in‑house patients. Assist physicians and provide independent clinical care to patients in the clinic. Develop and implement comprehensive care plans with inpatient and outpatient teams. Maintain communication with appropriate health‑care providers to ensure proper follow‑up in the outpatient setting. Serve as a professional role model for staff while delivering expert care in all settings. Collaborate with care‑team and multidisciplinary members for direct in‑ and outpatient care. Provide clinical support in multiple clinic locations. Assist in preparing for and expediting the start of surgery in the OR. Prepare patients appropriately for surgery and provide pre‑operative and post‑operative instructions. Facilitate discharge planning. Maintain departmental policies, objectives, quality‑assurance programs, safety, environmental, and infection‑control standards. Participate in self‑ and peer‑evaluation to improve quality of care. Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with health‑care colleagues. Demonstrate effective verbal, non‑verbal, and written communication skills to promote problem resolution. Keep knowledge base current by reading professional literature and attending educational conferences. Design patient education programs to facilitate informed health‑care decisions. Evaluate goals and outcomes with consideration of benefit‑versus‑burden, safety, quality, and cost‑effectiveness for the patient, family, and organization. Develop diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions to achieve the goals of the patient’s plan of care. Perform other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications College or university degree from an accredited school or college. Knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related discipline. Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree (or equivalent) from an accredited nursing school or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program. Clinical experience in a related specialty area. Progressively responsible leadership experience in a clinical setting. Current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in Illinois or eligibility to receive it by the start date. Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois or eligibility to receive it by the start date. Current Physician Assistant license/registration in Illinois or eligibility to receive it by the start date. Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by the start date. Demonstrated clinical competency, effective leadership, and teaching skills. Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments. Ability to interview and obtain medical information. Strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, and strong analytical skills.
