Special Education Teacher

Job Summary This position provides instruction and support for students with disabilities that demonstrate significant delays in the areas of cognition, communication, academic functioning, social/emotional, and/or adaptive functioning. The Special Education Teacher will work in collaboration with school administrators, school psychologist, Office of Special Education staff and others as identified to provide a highly structured learning environment which supports student academic achievement and the implementation of a consistent behavioral support system. Qualifications A valid Maryland Professional Educator Certificate with appropriate endorsement area in Special Education. Knowledgeable of the IEP process and special education regulations, desired Has good interpersonal communication skills. Well-organized Ability to work well with colleagues, students, and parents. Responsibilities Implements the educational program and comprehensive related services as outlined in the Students' Individual Education Plans (IEP). Develops short and long-range plans consistent with curriculum goals, learners' diversity, and learning theory as well as developing transition plans by collaborating with the student, parent, transition specialist, para-educators, and other service providers and prepare students for transitioning out of high school. Plans and prepares for IEP and parent meetings. Maintains records of data collection, indicating progress of the student in achieving the objectives of the IEP and assists with the evaluation and assessment of students. Implement effective evidence-based and/or research-based methodologies and curriculum (e.g., PECS, Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), TEACCH, structured teaching, social skills). Understands assessment as an educational process including how to interpret information obtained from standardized and non-standardized assessment, analyze and use to develop instruction and goals for individual students as well as writing IEP paperwork and conducting IEP meetings. Utilizes specialized materials, equipment, and assistive technology for individuals with disabilities and understands the use of adaptive equipment for students with disabilities to plan and prepare for the integration of assistive and instructional technology to meet a student's individual needs. Understands basic classroom management theories and methods; with strategies for individual behavior management, crisis prevention/intervention, and de-escalation techniques. Understands the aspects of schedule, routines, and transitions that promote development and learning. Understands the characteristics of environments, including materials, equipment, and spatial arrangements that facilitate development, learning and interaction among students. Consults with therapists and others, as needed, to plan for students' needs and required adaptations, modifications, and use of assistive/adaptive technology. Assists hands-on with students' self-care and basic living skills such as eating, toileting/diapering, ensuring medication is given, dressing and hygiene. Provides supervision and establishes the schedule, role, responsibilities, and expectations for the para-educators assigned to assist the teacher. Communicates regularly with the parents to nurture a supportive and cooperative relationship between home and school. Communicates effectively in written and oral form using positive interpersonal skills. Maintains confidentiality, maintenance of professional ethics and best practice standards maintenance of school policies and procedures. Engages in professional development to stay current on researched-based instructional strategies and services, and seeks additional resources and assistance as needed to meet the individualized needs of students. Other duties as assigned. Pay and Hours Placement on the Queen Anne's County Teacher's Salary Schedule commensurate with certification, experience, and preparation. This is a Full‑time, benefited 10‑month position.
