Geologist 2 – Fairbanks The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Mining, Land & Water, is recruiting for a Geologist 2 based in Fairbanks. This position is open to Alaska Residents only. As a Journeyman-level Geologist 2, you will apply your geoscience and mining engineering expertise to permit, monitor, and inspect suction dredging, placer mining, and hard‑rock exploration operations across Alaska while administering applicable state mining laws. You will review Applications for Permits to Mine in Alaska (APMA), establish permit stipulations, and carry out duties related to permit issuance. You will assist operators in developing comprehensive mine‑plan applications, reclaiming disturbed lands, and interpreting geological, geochemical, and geophysical data. You will independently plan and conduct field inspections, map mine sites using GPS and GIS tools, ensure regulatory compliance, and prepare inspection reports. You will also provide technical information to the public and agencies on mining laws, land status, reclamation standards, and mineral resources. Position‑Specific Competencies Geology – knowledge of concepts, principles, and theories of earth origins and structure, including physical and organic history. Mining Engineering – knowledge of rock mechanics, exploration, excavation, extraction, processing, transportation and mineral land development. Compliance Inspection – knowledge of guidelines, regulations, and procedures associated with compliance, including issuance of citations, fines, or orders. Oral and Written Communication – ability to convey information effectively to diverse audiences and deliver convincing presentations. Analytical Thinking / Problem Solving – use logical, systematic, sequential approaches to address problems or manage situations. Minimum Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or a related field, and one year of entry‑level professional experience in those disciplines (e.g., service as a Geologist 1).
