Substation Senior Structural Engineer

Substation Senior Structural Engineer HDR Engineering seeks a Substation Senior Structural Engineer (Substation Sr. SE) to join our nationally ranked Power Delivery team. The Sr. SE focuses on the structural design and foundation analysis & design for high‑voltage (up to 500 kV) switchyard and substation projects, collaborating with project managers, teams across multiple offices, and other engineering disciplines to deliver reliable, resilient, and sustainable power systems. Responsibilities Lead, oversee, review, and/or execute structural engineering tasks for substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes—including detailed design, calculations, and fabrication drawings. Lead, oversee, review, and/or execute foundation design tasks for substation structures (drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, etc.) using industry‑standard software. Support physical substation layout designs, plans, elevations/sections, details, and associated bills of materials. Prepare and review specifications for construction & materials. Assign project tasks and provide technical guidance to project team members. Coordinate and perform quality checks and reviews for project deliverables per HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements; review projects from other teams as needed. Collaborate with transmission line civil/structural engineers to cross‑train and share resources. Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain standards. Work independently and directly mentor, train, and/or supervise Project Engineers, EITs, or CADD/Designers. Lead multiple projects concurrently, utilizing teams in different locations. Participate in project reviews and develop specific technical expertise; attend relevant training and seminars. Assist with technical papers and presentations that showcase HDR’s capabilities at industry conferences. Participate in project reviews as required. Travel may be required. Qualifications Master’s degree in Structural Engineering. SE license or ability to obtain; preference for Hawaii and California. Minimum 10 years of technical design experience with high‑voltage (up to 500 kV) switchyard and substation projects, including foundation and steel structural design. Experience with physical/outdoor design of substation projects of varying complexity. Technical design experience using industry‑standard software (PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile or equivalent). Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113 and other industry standards. Knowledge of AISC‑360, ASCE‑7, ACI‑318 and related standards. Previous consulting firm experience. Self‑starter with strong written and verbal communication; strong conceptual, organizational, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Professional Engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the position location (PE or P.Eng). Experience in design calculations and layouts; ability to design and detail in steel, concrete, masonry, and wood. Understanding of gravity and lateral analysis.
