Senior Director of Global Relations, Chapters, and Membership

The Senior Director, Global Relations, Chapters & Membership is responsible for leading TMA's global membership strategy and serving as a key relationship builder across the organization's worldwide network of members, chapters, volunteers, and international affiliates. Reporting directly to the CEO, this role serves as a senior leader within the organization and plays a critical role in strengthening member value, driving membership growth and retention, and fostering a vibrant, connected global community. This position oversees the development and execution of initiatives that support TMA's strategic priorities related to membership growth, chapter success, volunteer engagement, leadership development, and international connectivity. The Senior Director serves as the primary relationship manager for TMA's chapter and international network, building trusted partnerships with volunteer leaders, chapter executives, and members while ensuring alignment, collaboration, and strong communication across the organization. The ideal candidate is passionate about professional communities and understands that relationships are at the heart of a successful membership organization. This person thrives on connecting people, supporting volunteer leaders, strengthening chapters, and helping members realize meaningful value from their involvement with TMA. Equally comfortable thinking strategically and operationally, this individual develops long‑term growth initiatives while ensuring strong systems, reporting, accountability, and execution. They also will roll up their sleeves to ensure strong execution, accountability, and results. Success in this role requires a highly collaborative, member‑focused leader who is energized by engaging with people, solving problems, building partnerships, and creating exceptional experiences for members and volunteers around the world. The Senior Director has P&L responsibility and will develop and manage departmental budgets and forecasts, and project plans related to membership, chapter relations, and international activities while leading and developing a high‑performing team dedicated to advancing TMA's mission and strategic priorities. The Senior Director leads a team responsible for membership operations, chapter relations, reporting, and global community engagement. This is a hybrid role with 3 days per week in our downtown Chicago office. Focus: Serve as the organization's senior advisor on membership, chapter relations, volunteer engagement, and global network development. Key Responsibilities Membership Growth & Retention Strategy (30%) Establish measurable membership growth targets and performance metrics across global, regional, and chapter‑level initiatives Develop and execute comprehensive membership acquisition, retention, reinstatement, and engagement strategies aligned with organizational goals Chapter Relations & Volunteer Committee Leadership (30%) Serve as the primary liaison for TMA’s chapter executives and chapter volunteer leadership network Support chapter reporting, growth, membership development, operational consistency, and member engagement initiatives Provide guidance, training, and consultative support to chapters regarding membership processes, reporting systems, governance, and best practices Hold chapter membership performance reviews with volunteer leaders and chapter executives, using data and benchmarks to identify opportunities, share best practices, and improve results Develop leadership training and onboarding resources for membership committee volunteers and chapter executives Monitor chapter health and engagement metrics and identify opportunities for improvement or intervention where needed Facilitate regular communication and collaboration across chapters (both leadership and staff) to encourage idea sharing and organizational alignment Ensure effective operational oversight of chapter event reporting, reconciliation, and registration processes Membership Operations & Reporting (10%) Own performance against membership acquisition, retention, reinstatement, and engagement goals Provide oversight and accountability for the accuracy and effectiveness of chapter and membership operational processes Monitor membership trends, engagement data, and retention performance to identify opportunities for growth and continuous improvement Provide strategic oversight of membership operations, renewal processes, member communications, and reporting to ensure an exceptional member experience and achievement of growth and retention goals Partner closely with Marketing & Communications to develop integrated campaigns that support membership recruitment, retention, and engagement Collaborate with Sponsorship, Education, Certification, and Events teams to strengthen member value and increase participation across TMA programs and offerings Lead member journey mapping and onboarding strategies to improve member experience and long‑term engagement International & Global Relations (25%) Build and maintain strong relationships with international chapter leaders and affiliate partners to strengthen TMA's global network and support long‑term growth Help identify and evaluate opportunities for international growth, affiliate development, and market expansion consistent with TMA's long‑term strategic priorities Partner with the CEO and volunteer leadership to strengthen TMA's global footprint and foster collaboration across regions Coordinate with international volunteer leadership to ensure consistent communication, operational support, and strategic alignment Assist administrative staff (international and U.S.‑based) with international licensing, governance, reporting, and compliance processes in partnership with Finance and Legal partners Help identify opportunities for cross‑border collaboration, education, sponsorship, and membership growth Organizational Leadership (5%) Serve as a collaborative leader and strategic thought partner across departments Contribute to organizational planning, budgeting, forecasting, and annual goal‑setting efforts Support board committees, volunteer groups, and strategic initiatives as assigned Represent TMA professionally with members, sponsors, partners, and industry stakeholders Foster a culture of accountability, responsiveness, collaboration, and member service excellence Qualifications 10–12+ years of progressive leadership experience in membership, association management, chapter relations, business development, or related fields Experience working with volunteer‑led organizations and governance structures strongly preferred Demonstrated success driving membership growth, retention, and engagement initiatives Experience managing budgets, forecasting revenue, and achieving membership growth and financial performance objectives Demonstrated experience leading, developing, and coaching high‑performing teams Strong relationship management and stakeholder engagement skills Experience working with international organizations or global membership structures preferred Strong analytical and operational capabilities, including reporting and KPI management Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment Experience with AMS/CRM platforms and data‑driven membership strategy preferred Success Profile Strategic in outlook and highly execution‑oriented, with a track record of turning ideas into measurable results. Deeply committed to creating value for members, volunteers, and the broader TMA community.
