HVAC Mechanic III

Hours Per Day: 10 Months of Employment: 3-6 Month Interim Position Position Type: Interim Level of Benefits: None Pay Range: $23.74 - $29.69 (based on state service) Minimum Degree Level: High school or equivalent Additional Position Comments: Constructs, modifies, and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, environmental control systems, as well as refrigerated and gas-powered kitchen equipment, ensuring all systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards.

Reports to: HVAC Supervisor/Maintenance Director

Supervises: None

Job Summary: Constructs, modifies or repairs heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment and environmental control systems. Performs work, including but not limited to monitoring operation of energy management systems in Buncombe County Public Schools; repairing and maintaining HVACR systems and equipment; conducting new energy management system installation; and providing energy management system computers with new and/or updated program versions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma
• NC Heating and Cooling License.
• Technical school training for HVACR equipment
• Minimum of two years experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of ventilation, air conditioning and environmental control systems
• EPA Universal Certification

Performance Responsibilities

• Install, repair and maintain HVACR systems and equipment independently.
• Independently identifies malfunctioning equipment by troubleshooting and fault diagnoses.
• Independently makes repairs to HVACR equipment hardware; and performs system tests to ensure system operability.
• Multi-task and prioritize effectively, flexibly and responsively while possessing the ability to collaborate with diverse work styles using a high level of Emotional Intelligence and Professionalism.
• Coordinates new/replacement projects with contractor(s) and inspectors without supervision.
• Knowledge or willingness to learn how to install, monitor and operate Buncombe County Schools energy management system.
• Prepares new computer programs and/or updates existing programs to continually optimize HVACR performance.
• Performs other duties/special assignments as required or to meet the ongoing needs of the department such as the ability to complete assignments outside of normal working hours on emergency basis.

Knowledge

• Knowledge of heating, ventilation and refrigeration theory
• Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment
• Knowledge of the design and operation of centrifugal and reciprocal compressors
• Knowledge of electricity
• Knowledge of the design and operation of pneumatic control systems

Equipment

• Equipment used includes hammers, wrenches, metal snips, electric drills, pipe cutters and benders, measurement gauges, acetylene torches, voltmeters, thermometers, pressure gauges, manometers, computers and other testing devices

• Work involves reviewing the heating and cooling requirements and makes recommendations to achieve optimum system effectiveness and efficiency

Working Conditions

Expectations

• Valid North Carolina's driver's license
• Will be driving company vehicle - must have good driving record
• Maintain clean and neat vehicle
• Report maintenance needed and schedule repairs
