Job Description PART-TIME SCHOOL BUS DRIVER Job ID: 4882212 Starting Date: Aug 17, 2026 Salary: $17.18 per hour Position Type: Part-Time, Permanent Position Overview Burke County Public Schools is seeking dependable, safety-minded community members to join our transportation team. This part-time role offers a consistent school-year schedule while helping local students get to and from school safely. Schedule & Benefits Part-Time, Permanent Position Approx. 6:00 AM–8:30 AM and 2:00 PM–4:30 PM, Monday–Friday Weekends, holidays, and summers off Paid CDL training available Local Burke County routes only Specific Duties and Responsibilities Performs required pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections and documents inspections as required by Transportation Department Operating Instructions for bus drivers. Reports mechanical defects or failures to the Zone Transportation Supervisor, the Zone Routing Specialist, the mechanic on‑duty at the bus parking site, or the school bus garage control center. If the assigned school bus is declared unfit for service, performs pre‑and post‑trip inspections on the substitute school bus. Performs post‑trip inspection to detect students who may still be on board the school bus asleep or incapacitated and to detect any other irregularities or vandalism to the bus interior. Operates the assigned school bus on the route(s) and schedule provided by the Zone Transportation Supervisor. Reports to the Zone Transportation Supervisor any changes to the route by the school principal that necessitate a change in the route, bus stops, or schedule. Obeys all traffic laws and school bus regulations while operating the school bus. Observes all safety regulations and standards for school buses, including clearing the school bus and evacuating students quickly in the event of an emergency. Has a copy of the current Handbook for the School Bus Driver and the Safety Assistant; refers to it periodically for guidance. Maintains discipline of students assigned to ride the school bus, establishing a discipline plan consistent with school disciplinary objectives and providing a progressive plan of consequences for students who cause disciplinary problems and rewards for those who maintain proper safety standards. Reports undisciplined students to the responsible school principal. Discharges students only at authorized locations; transports only authorized students. Keeps the school bus clean and free of papers, bottles, cans, food wrappers, and other items that may present a safety problem. Reports all accidents as required by Transportation Operating Instructions and remains at the scene of the accident until released by the on‑scene transportation supervisor. Completes personal time cards and required reports, including reports required in the event of an accident or incident aboard the school bus. Remains in charge of all students aboard the bus at the time of an accident, determining the existence and extent of injuries, and maintaining the safety of all passengers. Secures the assigned bus before leaving the vehicle after a run or route, parking it properly, inspecting for damage, and securing all windows and doors. Maintains acceptable relationships with parents/guardians of students transported and with school personnel. Minimum Training and Experience Graduation from high school and some experience driving large vehicles with some experience in transporting humans preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities. Special Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with school bus certification. Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a school bus, quickly decelerate the bus, firmly apply brakes, turn the steering wheel rapidly, secure the bus, exit through the rearmost emergency exit and assist passengers within 20 seconds. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly. Data Conception: Ability to compare and judge functional or composite characteristics of data, people, or things. Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and signal people to convey information, receive instructions, and communicate information to students and others. Language Ability: Ability to read and prepare correspondence, reports, and other documents in proper format, and to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence. Intelligence: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions and to deal with problems involving several concrete variables. Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, follow oral and written instructions, and communicate effectively in standard English. Numerical Aptitude: Ability to use mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals. Form/Spatial Aptitude: Ability to inspect items for proper dimensions. Motor Coordination: Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in operating a school bus. Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle a variety of items, bus equipment, control knobs, and switches; minimal eye/hand/foot coordination. Color Discrimination: Ability to recognize colors of traffic signals: red, green, amber. Interpersonal Temperament: Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions, adaptable to stressful situations. Physical Communication: Ability to talk and hear; sufficient hearing to distinguish warning sounds at a distance of five feet. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Considerable knowledge of safe and efficient practices and procedures used in the operation of a school bus. Considerable knowledge of traffic laws and school bus regulations. Considerable knowledge of safety regulations and standards for school buses; general knowledge of Transportation Department Operating Instructions. Ability to physically inspect the bus per instructions. Ability to detect and report observable mechanical defects or failures. Ability to maintain discipline of students and keep the bus clean. Ability to complete required reports. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative. Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with parents/guardians, students, and school personnel. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required.
