- Experience in school, public health and/or pediatric nursing desired.
- Ability to work independently and make decisions in accordance with established policies and regulations.
- Requires strong analytical and computer skills, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, strong communications skills
- Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations as they relate to public health.
- Knowledge and practical experience regarding basic computer skills, Microsoft Word, Access and Excel including MOS Certification as determined by Administration. A willingness to learn and become proficient with all other current district standard software.
- General knowledge of public health management information systems and how to use them to support the school environment.
- Engage in professional learning as aligned with school and district.
- Partner with others in the school community to share expertise and create plans toward educational and social progress.
- Develop professional development and student seminars around specific goal areas and social skills.
- Coordinate action with community care partners, to enhance collaboration and service delivery.
- Experience in the design and participation of staff training initiatives and individualized health plans.
- Demonstrates interest and participation in a wide range of professional growth opportunities through such activities as advanced coursework, in-service programs, conference attendance and/or other related activities.
- Demonstrates and verifiable record of excellent, positive and productive relationships with people of all ages and backgrounds and a commitment to equal opportunity for all.

Essential Functions: Responsibilities to Students:
- Oversee the compilation and maintenance of an annually updated site and district list of students with special medical needs in each building.
- Consult with parents and school personnel regarding health needs of homebound students, pregnant students and those students with special health needs.
- Participate in IEP's and parent conferences as required and/or requested.
- Work with outside agencies and service clubs for assisting students with financial support for their vision, dental and hearing needs.
- Coordinate Scoliosis Screening, Growth and Development and AIDS education at the designated grade levels.
- Reports incidents (e.g. suspected child abuse) for the purpose of maintaining the personal safety of students and providing a positive learning environment; adhering to applicable laws, district policies, and procedures.
- Adhere to a strong professional ethic and legal requirements for confidentiality regarding students' records; discreetly handle sensitive information.
- Train, supervise and evaluate Medical Assistants.
- As scheduled by the central office, the nurse shall meet with the medical assistants, assess the needs of students and schools, and then visit schools accordingly.
- Flexible schedule in order to meet the needs and demands of the position.
- Oversee student medical plans and immunization to assure that the district is in legal compliance.
- Participate in meetings with parents regarding Health Plans and IEP's and/or prepare certified medical assistants to do so.
- Coordinate classroom checks for infections or contagious diseases or conditions when necessary.
- Oversee Medical Assistant completion of state immunization reports and survey of students on medications each spring.
- Shall work with the administration to develop a program designed to upgrade health standards for students and staff.
- Serve as a resource person in the development and implementation of K-12 health curriculum including sex education, AIDS education and Michigan Model.
- Conduct necessary follow-up on vision, hearing and tuberculin testing program.
- Serve as liaison between the County Health Department, public health nurses, schools, parents, clinics, and other agencies.
- Refer cases, as needed, to the County Health Department, clinics and physicians, and provide follow-up coordination.
- Provide consultation services to the parochial schools as time permits.
- Investigate, diagnose and report, as required, all communicable diseases such as measles, chicken pox, etc.
- Prepare and present an annual report of activities to the Superintendent.
- Be aware of and utilize the Clara Manning Sick Fund and the Child Wellness Fund which offers assistance to indigent children in need of medical, dental and vision care, etc.
- Uses medical equipment to provide health care to students/staff, including, but not limited to, blood glucose monitor, stethoscopes, thermometers, sphygmomanometers.
- Uses personal computers.
- Adheres to all applicable professional safety standards and practices in the nursing field, including requirements set forth in federal and state law, and Occupational Safety and Health regulations.
- Implements Board Policy regarding Blood Borne Pathogens and other Board policies regarding the medical or health care of employees and students.
- Frequent travel between schools may be required.
- Work in standard school building environment.
- Exposure to body secretions, blood borne pathogens, medicine and medicinal supplies, illnesses and diseases.
- Any combination of education, licenses, certifications and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or related science area, with coursework in growth and development, health assessment, public or school health, crisis intervention and health education.
- Master's degree in related field preferred.
- Must meet qualifications of a school nurse as defined in state regulations.
- Successful experiences working with pediatric population, preferably in a community or school setting desirable.
- Registered professional nurse, designated as R.N. as defined and determined by state law, and currently licensed in the state.
- Current certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
