Salary will be determined in accordance with current pay procedures. This Correctional Officer Captain position is located at Everglades Correctional Institution. The incumbent in this position is considered to have regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36, Florida Administrative Code. Minimum Qualifications Must be at least 18 years of age Be a citizen of the United States Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent Must have completed the basic recruit training course for correctional officers and have one year of experience as a certified officer with the State of Florida Must not have received a suspension within the past 12 months Must not have received an involuntary demotion within the past 24 months Must not have received less than a 3.00 rating on a performance evaluation within the past 3 fiscal years Specific Duties and Responsibilities Supervise Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants assigned to any security post on any of the established shifts; serve as the initial commander during emergency situations; plan, organize, and coordinate the activities of all officers assigned to a shift. Delegate post assignments, coordinate leave use, ensure accurate completion of attendance and leave reports; work with lead officers for proper security coverage. Conduct periodic individual counseling with staff to outline problem areas and give additional duties or instructions. Supervise searches for contraband and make daily inspections of buildings and grounds; inspect physical plant for security concerns and to maintain proper sanitation standards; function as facility manager during non-administrative hours. Circulate throughout institution observing employees’ performance; conduct performance evaluations; schedule and/or coordinate training programs for subordinates; conduct continuous training of subordinate staff in security procedures and performance; take and recommend non-appealable disciplinary action and recommend appealable disciplinary action to higher level management. Supervise and coordinate body cavity searches as authorized by the Warden; authorize non-emergency applications of use of force; supervise inmates commensurate with the level of risk they present; manage inmate housing areas, enforce rules and sanitation standards; transport inmates using approved restraints and observing relevant laws, policies and procedures; conduct accurate head counts; maintain custody and control over inmates at appointments outside the secured perimeter and escort inmates within the secured perimeter; inventory personal property and issue receipts. Perform crisis intervention functions to include but not limited to subduing violent or uncooperative inmates, defending persons against attack, or preventing escapes, using approved deadly or non-deadly force, restraints or other approved methods; maintain facility security; conduct contraband searches; visual inspection of body cavities. Observe inmate behavior to identify inmates exhibiting mental or emotional disorders, using counseling techniques or referral action as outlined in written policies or guidelines. Provide emergency assistance during emergencies, disasters and accidents, including CPR, first aid, apprehension of escaping or escaped inmates, implementation of evacuation procedures, security of inmates and/or areas in accordance with the emergency situation. Conduct inspections and visual and audio surveillance of persons, property, vehicles, building and outdoor areas; physically check doors, windows, gates, barred sections, fences and other areas to ensure proper security. Maintain proper inventory records; issue and receive property and equipment. Attend mandatory and other training. Perform other related duties as required.
