Lab Phlebotomist

DEPARTMENT: Vanderburgh County Health Department – Lab Collecting capillary and venous blood specimens from patients of all ages, but primarily pediatric patients (under the age of 7), in both on-site and off-site settings. Performing blood collection services for laboratory testing associated with VCHD programs and community-based initiatives. Receiving and processing laboratory referrals and contacting clients to schedule appointments. Following up with clients who miss appointments and assisting with rescheduling at a convenient time. Performing point-of-care testing, including lead, glucose, and cholesterol screenings. Conducting outreach and research activities to identify pediatric clients eligible for lead testing. Providing phlebotomy training and competency support to VCHD employees whose job responsibilities require blood collection skills. Assisting various VCHD departments with patient specimen collection as needed. Performing administrative duties, including filing, maintaining records, generating weekly and monthly reports, verifying insurance information, scheduling appointments,and maintaining client files. Greeting clients, answering and directing telephone calls, responding to emails, and providing excellent customer service. Utilizing computer systems and software to support daily operations, translation services, documentation, reporting, and research activities. Performing additional duties as assigned. The incumbent applies established laboratory policies, procedures, and best practices to a variety of situations while exercising sound judgment to ensure efficient laboratory operations. Unusual circumstances or deviations from standard procedures are discussed with the Laboratory Director. Work is reviewed periodically for compliance with departmental policies, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations, ethical standards, and professional laboratory practices. Situations not clearly addressed by established guidelines will be reviewed by the Laboratory Director to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and departmental objectives. The incumbent maintains professional, courteous, and cooperative working relationships with department staff, Laboratory Director, healthcare professionals, community partners, and clients. Effective communication and collaboration are essential to providing quality laboratory services and supporting the mission of the Health Department. Work is performed primarily in a laboratory and clinical setting. Moderate physical effort is required, including standing, walking, bending, and transporting supplies or equipment. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases may occur. Adherence to Universal Precautions, infection control protocols, and safety procedures is required.
