Heavy Equipment Operator

Position Overview The Entry Level Field Trainee is responsible for safely performing a variety of construction duties to assist crews at various locations. The trainee will complete routine tasks such as loading, unloading materials, and preparing and cleaning the worksite. During the first 90 days, a mentor will guide acclimation to the job, workforce, and company. Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions) General Laborer Prepares ground surfaces for road building, removing debris from the construction path. Uses hand shovels to prepare trenches for pipes and utility lines, including excavation of existing water, sewer, conduit, and other utility lines. Attaches trench boxes and pipes to chains or guide wires for safe lifting and movement by heavy equipment operators, and installs shoring materials. Operates ground compactors, levels and rakes dirt, sets string markers, and removes items within the area to be paved. May cut concrete with a saw to finish grades. Performs maintenance and repairs on machinery, greases moving parts, replaces screens, rollers, and cone liners, and repairs conveyor problems. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor. Equipment Operator Operates equipment safely and efficiently, maintaining safe slopes on excavations and proper barricading. Locates utilities and buried lines before digging. Performs minor servicing and maintenance or reports major issues to supervisor. Demonstrates knowledge of trenching and shoring standards, keeps time and material records, and performs other duties as assigned by supervisor. Truck Driver Operates end dumps and/or belly dumps with and without pups, demonstrating operational knowledge and safety. Maintains accurate time and material records and performs other duties as assigned by supervisor. Ready Mix Driver Maintains equipment in a safe and clean condition, performs pre- and post-trip inspections, and verifies compliance with mix specifications. Aligns mixer drum under the plant disbursement chute to receive product, drives the truck to unloading locations, and releases concrete into the poured area. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor. Quality Control Technician Collects samples for testing safely and efficiently, using nuclear density gauges for asphalt and soil compaction. Applies state DOT and governing agency specifications, performs project test procedures, and records test results accurately and promptly. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor. Mechanic Troubleshoots problems and performs durable repairs, dismantles devices for access to defective parts using hoists and hand tools. Maintains and repairs heavy equipment, trucks, shop, and non-mobile equipment, including oil changes, greasing, fluid additions, filter changes, and preventative maintenance schedules. Troubleshoots and repairs electrical and hydraulic systems, diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, and drive trains. Orders parts and supplies, manages purchase orders and invoices, and operates computers for job functions. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor. Other Duties Uses various equipment, hand and power tools, and delivers construction materials to job site locations. Performs job site clean‑up, assists with flagging and traffic control, and maintains all tools and equipment in a safe and clean condition. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor. Qualifications Education/Experience High school diploma or GED preferred. Experience is not required. Work Requirements Reads and comprehends instructions and brief written or verbal directions. Works well with others in group or one‑on‑one settings. Subject to drug testing and physical agility testing. Knowledge/Skill Requirements Must possess a current and valid driver’s license. Quality – Demonstrates accuracy, thoroughness, seeks quality improvement, and applies feedback. Applies common sense to detailed written or oral instructions. Physical Requirements Employee frequently sits, climbs, and uses hands to handle equipment; occasionally stands, walks, crawls, kneels, bends, and reaches with arms above shoulders. Employee occasionally lifts/moves up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities: close, distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Work Environment Exposure to wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, outside weather, extreme cold or heat, and moderate to loud noise levels.
