Who will you be working with?

Wabtec's Train Handling solutions include Trip Optimizer® and Locotrol®, which work together to optimize train performance and automate freight operations. Trip Optimizer creates and executes fuel-efficient operating plans that meet schedule and train-handling requirements, while Locotrol enables coordinated control of distributed locomotives throughout the train. Together, these technologies improve train handling, fuel efficiency, operational safety, and the ability to operate longer and heavier trains.

As a Systems Engineer , you will collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams, product management, program leadership, and railroad customers to develop and deliver advanced train automation solutions that drive operational efficiency and business value.

How will you make a difference?

As a Systems Engineer , you will lead portions of the design, development, integration, and deployment of Wabtec's Train Handling portfolio. You will define and manage system requirements, perform trade studies, coordinate verification and validation activities, and contribute to product strategy and feature development.

The successful candidate will bring an AI-native mindset, proactively leveraging AI technologies throughout the engineering lifecycle to accelerate innovation, improve product quality, and enhance customer outcomes. You will identify opportunities to apply advanced analytics, automation, and AI-enabled capabilities to solve complex operational challenges and improve system performance.

What do we want to know about you?

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science from an accredited college or university

• Minimum of 5 years hands-on design, requirements development and implementation experience involving; Engineering Systems, Hardware / Software Engineering, and/or Data Information Systems

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

• Strong oral and written communication skills

• Ability to work in a cross-functional, global environment

• Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally

What will your typical day look like?

• Lead the design, development, integration, testing, and enhancement of Train Handling solutions while applying sound systems engineering principles and established product development processes.

• Elicit, analyze, define, and manage customer and system requirements, ensuring alignment with product objectives, operational needs, and business priorities.

• Partner with cross-functional teams, including Product Management, Software Engineering, Train Control, Office Systems, Safety, Validation, and Applications Engineering, to deliver high-quality solutions on schedule.

• Drive requirements reviews, design reviews, technical assessments, and verification and validation activities throughout the product lifecycle.

• Investigate and resolve complex technical issues by analyzing system performance, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective actions.

• Plan and execute field testing, validation, and operational evaluations to ensure solutions meet customer expectations and performance requirements.

• Develop and maintain technical documentation, engineering deliverables, project status updates, and system specifications.

• Collaborate directly with railroad customers, subject matter experts, and internal stakeholders to understand operational challenges and translate them into effective technical solutions.

• Apply industry standards, engineering best practices, and emerging technologies to continuously improve product capabilities, reliability, and performance.

• Leverage AI-enabled tools and technologies to accelerate analysis, improve engineering productivity, support decision-making, and enhance product innovation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience applying systems engineering principles throughout the product development lifecycle.

• Experience working with software, controls, automation, transportation, embedded, or safety-critical systems.

• Familiarity with systems architecture, requirements management, verification and validation, and systems integration activities.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to influence technical decisions.

• Experience collaborating across multiple engineering disciplines and managing competing priorities in a dynamic environment.

• Demonstrated ability to apply AI-enabled tools, advanced analytics, or data-driven approaches to improve engineering outcomes.

• Working knowledge of railroad operations, train control systems, AAR standards, CENELEC standards, or other transportation industry regulations is preferred.

The salary rate for this role is currently $79100-112800 The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands and work location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. More information on offered benefits, which include health, welfare, and retirement, are available at mywabtecbenefits.com.
