Job Title: Registered Nurse - Med/Surg Level 1 Profession: RN Med/Surg Specialty: Acute Med/Surg Duration: 22 weeks Shift: Full-Time, Variable Day/Night Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum of 2 years in Med/Surg License: State RN Licensure Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS Required Must-Have: 2 years of med-surg experience required Description: The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical skills, and communication abilities in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The RN assesses patient needs, develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates care delivery throughout the patient’s episode. The Med/Surg RN develops specialized skills in cardiac care, including telemetry monitoring. The RN is accountable for patient and family education to assist in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization, including lifestyle changes to support health and healing. He/She promotes comfort and provides emotional support in a healing environment. Applies nursing knowledge and skill in delivering care by assessing patient and family needs through active listening and analyzing data obtained through direct observation and assessment. Creates a developmentally appropriate, culturally relevant, and individualized plan of care to address the health problems identified. In collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and health care team members, sets goals and monitors the patient’s progress. The RN adjusts the plan based on patient response or changes in condition. Promotes, advocates for, and protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient. Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and uses results from quality improvement activities to initiate changes in practice. Engages in self-evaluation, identifying strengths and areas for professional development. Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of solutions to problems. Demonstrates skill in nursing interventions, including medication administration. Motivates the patient and family by teaching them what is needed to continue care and healing at home. Assesses patient and family learning styles and structures sessions to maximize understanding. Seeks teachable moments during care delivery to emphasize pertinent information. Asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in the self-care process. Provides tools and information to assist the patient and family after discharge. Documents the education provided and the patient/family response to it. Encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to promote the best possible patient outcomes. Teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. Complies with infection prevention strategies and maintains competencies required for the specific population in the area assigned. Reports potential safety risks and inappropriate practices. Promotes leadership awareness and fosters positive change. Conducts rounds per protocol and uses tools and equipment needed to keep the patient and family informed, engaged, and safe. Nursing practice reflects the importance of making a meaningful connection with patients and families. Seeks to develop a helping, trusting relationship by being present during interactions. Listens, communicates, engages, and anticipates patient and family needs. Strives to understand what is most important to the patient and family, acknowledging their central focus in care and services.
