Mechanic Trainee

Description Under general supervision of a Maintenance Shop superintendent, a Mechanic will perform a variety of manual or semiskilled tasks to maintain Dump Trucks, Service Trucks, and/or Heavy Equipment such as road building equipment. Responsibilities Cleans, greases and assists in setting up, adjusting, repairing various types of off road/ on road equipment and motor vehicles. May operate any equipment on a temporary basis for trouble shooting and adjustment analysis. Manipulate hand and power tools to perform maintenance adjustments. Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure they are in proper operating condition. Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists. Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment. Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices. Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery. Test drive trucks to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure they are working properly. Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists. Attach test instruments to equipment, and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions. Rebuild gas or diesel engines. Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications. Process written and oral analysis reports for recordkeeping. Work independently in the absence of supervision and maintain a cooperative working relationship with coworkers and the general public. Physical Requirements The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer). The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects. The ability to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position. The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions. The ability to detect or tell the differences between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness. The ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs. Qualifications High School diploma or GED. Must possess a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
