Job Overview The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) seeks a Registered Respiratory Therapist to provide high-quality respiratory care to diverse patient populations. Responsibilities include performing assessments, administering treatments, managing ventilators, and collaborating with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement care plans. The therapist will educate patients and families on respiratory conditions and therapies while maintaining accurate clinical documentation. Responsibilities Perform respiratory assessments and contribute to individualized care plans for patients with acute and chronic cardiopulmonary conditions. Administer therapeutic respiratory modalities, including oxygen therapy, aerosolized medications, lung expansion, and airway clearance techniques. Set up, manage, monitor, and troubleshoot invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilators in collaboration with the care team. Obtain, analyze, and interpret arterial blood gases and other respiratory-related diagnostics to support clinical decision-making. Respond to respiratory emergencies, including rapid response and code situations, assisting with airway management and resuscitation. Operate, calibrate, and maintain respiratory therapy equipment, ensuring adherence to infection prevention and safety protocols. Document assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately and promptly in the electronic health record. Educate patients and families on respiratory conditions, therapies, equipment use, and self-management strategies to support safe transitions of care. Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals during rounds and care conferences to optimize patient outcomes. Participate in orientation, in-service training, and quality improvement activities that support MUSC’s mission of clinical excellence, education, and research. Patient assessment and monitoring Administering oxygen therapy Mechanical ventilation management Arterial blood gas sampling and interpretation Airway clearance techniques Emergency respiratory care (e.g., code response, rapid response) Pulmonary function testing support Non-invasive ventilation (BiPAP/CPAP) setup and titration Medication delivery via nebulizer and MDI Use and maintenance of respiratory equipment Electronic health record (EHR) documentation Interdisciplinary collaboration Infection prevention and control Patient and family education Quality and safety protocol adherence Qualifications Current registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Current South Carolina Respiratory Care Practitioner license (or eligibility). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred or obtained within defined timeframe. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and/or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) preferred for applicable patient populations. Recent clinical experience in acute care or completion of an accredited respiratory care clinical rotation.
