Job Description Orthotics and Prosthetics Technician I Location: Dallas - Hospital Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm Responsibilities Fabricates orthoses or prostheses as delegated by the lab supervisor, consistent with department scope of practice. Creates positive plaster molds, strips negative casts, thermoforms plastic, cuts out, grinds and smooths plastic for orthoses or prostheses. Contours, drills, polishes metal work for devices and adds closures as requested. Sewing materials as required and assists practitioners on a PRN basis as needed. Fits patients with shoes or fabricates shoe lifts. Tracks and orders materials for inventory and manages equipment. Care for and comes in contact with infants, toddlers, preschool, and school age patients. Interfaces with all clinical and lab staff regarding application of varied techniques to produce the most technically advanced and functional O&P devices. Contributes to the training of residents and students as assigned. Performs all duties of the production assistant as needed. Required Skills and Abilities High school degree or equivalent required. Certificate from an ABC recognized O&P school, or a minimum of one year’s applicable technical experience required. Must have sufficient knowledge and capability to fabricate all types of orthoses or prostheses as directed by the lab supervisor. Must possess excellent interpersonal communication and problem solving skills. Working Environment Working conditions: Inside. Position: Sitting, Standing, Walking. Physical demands: Very heavy. Requires lifting/carrying, pushing/pulling, repetitive movement, stooping/kneeling/bending; must lift between 75-100 lbs. Sensory/Communicative activities essential: Hearing, Seeing, Speaking, Feeling, Smelling. Exposure: Inside environment, bloodborne pathogens, loud noise, chemical hazards, respiratory hazards.
