Overview
The Surgical Technology Instructor teaches credit courses within the Surgical Technology Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program on the Beloit-Janesville Campus utilizing flexible delivery formats that meet the educational needs of students and regional employers in Rock and Green Counties.

This position reports directly to the Administrative Chair of Allied Health. Duties include classroom instruction in surgical technology, sterile processing and related perioperative topics, clinical supervision, laboratory facilitation, student evaluations, curriculum support, and collaboration with clinical affiliates.

Instructional position is funded through a grant, with anticipated funding through May 2031.

Responsibilities
Instructor Responsibilities
  1. Provide instruction for Surgical Technology and Sterile Processing program courses as assigned. Collaborate with employers to maintain, update or revise course curriculum as needed to maintain program currency and relevance.
  2. Prepare and maintain laboratory equipment, instruments supplies, and simulation materials. Oversee students in laboratory settings to ensure laboratory safety and compliance with infection prevention standards.
  3. Coordinate and oversee student clinical learning experiences in affiliated healthcare facilities. Communicate regularly with clinical instructors, preceptors, and affiliate representatives regarding student progress and program expectations.
  4. Assist in student placement and clinical scheduling as assigned. Conduct clinical site visits and maintain documentation related to clinical education. Monitor student compliance with clinical requirements, professional behaviors, and safety standards.
  5. Evaluate student performance through written examinations, competency assessments, clinical evaluations, and skills check-offs. Provide timely feedback, remediation, advising, and academic support to students.
  6. Engage in ongoing student learning assessment in the program to determine effectiveness of instruction and curriculum. Use data to measure program outcomes related to student persistence, retention, completion rate, course success, and to design improvement strategies based on the evidence.
  7. Maintain accurate student records and reports as requested by administrative offices and accreditation partners.
  8. Identify students needing assistance and refer students to Student Services. Collaborate with Student Services and the Learning Resources staff to help students adjust to the learning environment.
  9. Participate in outreach to healthcare organizations ad high school partners to recruit students for the programs. Collaborate with employers to assist in job placement for graduates.
  10. Prepare and update course syllabi using BTC guidelines for each course taught and work cooperatively with members of other departments and programs in coordinating courses
  11. Hold weekly office hours and other duties required to meet student, employer, and college needs.
  12. Create a classroom environment that is respectful of diversity and demonstrate a commitment to multiculturalism.
  13. Participate in Surgical Technology Advisory Committee meetings, department meetings, and college-wide full convenings.
  14. Work cooperatively with library staff in the selection of reference materials and coordination of library reference work for maximum utilization of library and other resources.
  15. Remain current on instructional best practices to support a variety of learning styles and utilize academic instructional technologies to improve student success across all program delivery modalities.
  16. Meet Wisconsin Technical College System professional development requirements through the Faculty Quality Assurance System.
  17. Assist department chair and dean in other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  2. Excellent problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
  3. Demonstrated ability to interact with diverse populations.
  4. Proficiency in instructional methodology, curriculum design, and program planning preferred.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, sterile technique, and practice.
  6. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  7. Ability to oversee students in classroom, labortoy, or clinical settings.


Education & Experience:

  1. Bachelor's degree in a health-related field required. Applicants with an associate degree in Surgical Technology and actively working toward a bachelor's degree may be considered.
  2. Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program accredited by a natonally recognized programatic accrediting agency.
  3. Credentialed as a Surgical Technician through a national certification program accredited by the national Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
  4. Minimum of two years of experience within the past five years, either in an operating room scrub role or as an instructor in an accredited surgical technology program, or a combination of both required.
  5. Post-secondary teaching experience preferred.
