Overview Year one is about mastering AP and learning NetSuite. From there, the work expands into reconciliations, ownership of close tasks, and financial reporting, with a corresponding title progression. How fast you move is a function of what you demonstrate, not a fixed calendar. We're investing heavily in this position because we see it as the beginning of a long-term career within Sports Basement. Our hope is to hire someone excited to grow into broader accounting and finance responsibilities over time. If you're looking for a place to build a career-not just your next job-we'd love to meet you.
Sports Basement offers a fun environment for staff to share their love of the outdoors with co-workers and customers, along with a range of unique benefits that let our people live healthy, active lives. This role is the entry point into Sports Basement's finance organization. You'll start in Accounts Payable because that's where you learn how the business actually works - every invoice tells you something about a vendor relationship, a store's buying patterns, or a process that needs fixing. Our Controller is building out the finance team, and we're hiring this position with the expectation that the right person grows into progressively more responsibility over the next several years. We process thousands of invoices a year across inventory and non-inventory vendors, and getting them right is what keeps product flowing into sixteen stores. It's high-volume work, and it's also the best accounting education you can get. Location and Schedule Based full-time out of our Corporate HQ in San Francisco's beautiful Presidio. Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:30pm. Occasional extended hours during month-end and year-end close. What you'll do

Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:30pm. Occasional extended hours during month-end and year-end close. What you'll do
- Post invoices in NetSuite, our ERP, verifying pricing and quantities against deliveries.
- Collaborate with buyers, receivers, vendors, and store staff to resolve product shortages, cost discrepancies, and other issues as they come up.
- Support store operations during peak seasons and events - sales floor, receiving, fulfillment, marketing events - getting real exposure to our customers, our products, and how the business runs outside the spreadsheet.
- Prepare weekly vendor payments, including checks and credit card authorizations.
- Perform vendor statement reconciliations to keep payments timely and accurate.
- Review and confirm accuracy of daily cash deposits.
- Prepare and submit chargeback disputes to credit card processors.
- Assist with month-end and year-end close.
- Look for ways to make all of the above faster and more accurate, and bring those ideas forward.
- Process and route incoming mail from our PO box.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Proficiency in Excel and Google Sheets. NetSuite experience is a plus, not an expectation.
- Working understanding of invoices, purchase orders, receipts, and three-way match.
- Fluency with AI tools, and an instinct for using them. A lot of what accounting departments have always done by hand can now be automated, and we want someone who treats repetitive work as a problem to be solved rather than a task to be endured. If you've used AI to automate repetitive work, improve a spreadsheet, analyze data, or build a workflow that saved time, we'd love to hear about it.
- Comfort with high transaction volume and detail-oriented work. Accuracy at scale is the foundation everything else in accounting is built on.
- Strong written and verbal communication. You'll be in regular contact with vendors, buyers, receiving teams, and store staff, and those relationships matter.
- Ability to handle confidential financial information with professionalism.
- Curiosity about the business, not just the numbers. The people who do well here ask why a cost discrepancy happened, not just how to code it.
- Couches before profit
- Economical vs. Extravagant
- Volunteer vs. Donate
- Proximity vs Productivity
- O.K. is not O.K.
- Doers vs. Degrees
- Creativity before efficiency
- Autonomy before rules
- YES! vs. NO
- Safety before speed
