Registered Nurse (RN) - Lactation Consultant

Job Summary JFK Memorial Hospital has provided medical care to residents in the Coachella Valley since 1966. The role involves developing, implementing, and maintaining high‑quality breastfeeding education for parents and families, as well as prenatal/postnatal education, consultation, and resources. Shift & Hours Days, 0700-1530, Monday-Friday, with occasional overnight shifts. Responsibilities Assesses each patient’s biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, spiritual, cultural, self‑care, educational, and discharge planning based on age and developmental status. Utilizes caring behaviors of empathy, active listening, and cultural sensitivity to maintain patient dignity. Provides a 20‑30 minute visit to all breastfeeding mothers during hospitalization, including observation, assessment, and instruction on: Proper latch‑on Proper positioning Nipple and breast care Feeding schedules Follows up with a phone call postpartum to every discharged patient. Maintains charting, records, and statistics on patients counseled. Develops and presents continuing education for nursing and other staff. Serves as a resource to patients, families, nursing, medical staff, and ancillary departments. Provides prenatal/postnatal counseling by appointment. Conducts regular breastfeeding classes for the community. Updates policies as needed. Demonstrates a courteous and professional manner with internal and external customers. Identifies unit problems, proposes solutions, and adapts to changes. Practices fiscal responsibility through efficient, cost‑effective care. Handles confidential information with discretion. Collaborates in the performance‑improvement process. Maintains unit‑specific competencies and annual educational requirements. Increases clinical knowledge through formal and informal educational programs, including research findings. Attends and participates in unit meetings, in‑services, and committee task forces. Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (required) Master’s in Healthcare (preferred) Registered Nurse license (required) Certified International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) (required) BLS (American Heart Association) certificate (required) NRP (American Academy of Pediatrics) certificate (required) Proficiency in Spanish Experience Minimum of 1 year as a Lactation Consultant in a healthcare setting (preferred) 3–5 years of Maternal–Child RN experience Previous program development and implementation experience (preferred) Advanced knowledge of prenatal nursing practices, anatomy and physiology, pregnancy, labor, birth, lactation, infant care, and clinical breastfeeding issues Exceptional communication, collaboration, teamwork, and flexibility EEO Statement Employment practices will not be influenced or affected by an applicant’s or employee’s race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age, disability, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, veteran status or any other legally protected status.
