The role performs a variety of specialized medical tissue testing procedures, including preparation and analysis of tissue samples that enable pathologists to determine diagnosis, disease progression, and treatment planning. This position also serves as a technical resource, supports workflow coordination, assists with scheduling and operational oversight, and acts as a backup to the supervisor as needed.Responsibilities:Investigate and resolve issues involving equipment, test results, specimens, and workflowMonitor daily operations within assigned laboratory section or work areaParticipate in laboratory teams, projects, and special assignmentsPerform routine and complex histology procedures including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and slide preparation across surgical pathology, autopsy, cytology, hematology, and research areasPerform and document quality control and equipment maintenance activitiesProvide leadership, guidance, and support to team membersServe as a technical resource to staff, students, and providersReport and review test results; consult with healthcare providers as neededEnsure accuracy of results and timely correction of errorsServe as a Lead Technologist or Program Manager in areas such as quality, education, competency, safety, or equipment managementTrain new employees and assist in teaching Clinical Laboratory Science students and Pathology residentsHistotechnologist Senior Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or a Biological ScienceCertification as HTL (ASCP) by the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC)Experience Requirements:If completion of a NAACLS-accredited histology program: minimum 2 years of relevant laboratory experienceIf degree in biological or chemical science: minimum 3 years of relevant laboratory experienceAdditional Acceptable Qualifications:HT (ASCP) with 5 years of direct immunohistochemistry experience, orElectron Microscopy (EM) certification (Certification #1 or #2)Histology Tech Sr Qualifications:Associate's degree in biological, chemical, or related science (with required CLIA coursework), or completion of a NAACLS-accredited histotechnician programCertification as HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) by the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC)Experience Requirements:Minimum 2 years of direct immunohistochemistry experience, orElectron Microscopy certification through the Microscopy Society of AmericaLegal Employer: NCHEALTHEntity: UNC REX HealthcareOrganization Unit: Rex Anatomic PathologyWork Type: Full TimeStandard Hours Per Week: 40.00Histotechnologist Sr Salary Range: $28.87 - $41.50 per hour (Hiring Range)Histology Tech Sr Salary Range: $26.85 - $38.60 per hour (Hiring Range)Pay offers are determined by experience and internal equityWork Assignment Type: OnsiteWork Schedule: Night JobLocation of Job: US:NC:RaleighExempt From Overtime: Exempt: NoThis position is employed by NC Health (Rex Healthcare, Inc., d/b/a NC Health), a private, fully-owned subsidiary of UNC Heath Care System.
