Position Overview The Town seeks a skilled Fleet Mechanic to perform mechanical repair and preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment, including automobiles, light and heavy‑weight trucks, tractors, cranes, and small equipment such as mowers, edgers, trimmers, saws, and generators. Responsibilities Answer calls for road service and make repairs at job sites. Change and repair tires on lawn mowers, small equipment, automobiles, light duty trucks, and heavy‑duty trucks. Diagnose mechanical problems on equipment and related components. Disassemble, repair, and re‑assemble air compressors, pumps, and related equipment. Perform general overhaul and repair work on automobiles, light and heavy trucks, small equipment, cranes, and other automotive and mechanical equipment. Drive fleet vehicles and service trucks as needed. Inspect, adjust, and replace units and parts—including valves, pistons, bearings, cooling, fuel, and exhaust systems—and tune motors using standard testing equipment. Inspect, repair, and overhaul automotive electric equipment such as alternators, distributors, and starters. Make minor repairs to automobile and truck bodies, including touch‑up painting and minor welding on dents and rust. Perform tire repair work. Conduct drivability tests for brakes, transmissions, differentials, axle assemblies, and hydraulic controls. Perform general preventative maintenance (A & B services) and minor repairs on all Town‑owned equipment. Remove and install automotive electric equipment such as lights, alarms, batteries, switches, and starters. Repair and overhaul brakes, transmissions, and differentials; install hydraulic controls. Use mechanical hand and power tools—including grinders, fender hammers, sanders, drill presses, lathes, gas cutting torches, welding equipment, jacks, and other shop tools. Respond to after‑hours and call‑back work upon request and may need to carry a cell phone. Maintain garage area clean and orderly. Qualifications High School diploma or GED. At least five years of experience repairing automobiles, light‑ and heavy‑duty trucks, lawn equipment, generators, cranes, and other automotive equipment. Completion of a related vocational course preferred (Diesel Diagnostic Repair; Light, Medium, and Heavy Truck Suspension and Brakes; Electronic and Diagnostic Systems; Drivability and Emission Repair). Valid Florida Class "B" Commercial driver’s license with air‑brake endorsement. Must furnish own basic automotive hand tools. Welding and fabrication skills preferred. Knowledge of parts books, repair manuals, and safety precautions. Knowledge of repair methods, materials, tools, and techniques for light and heavy‑duty automotive equipment and small equipment. Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operating principles and heavy‑truck and construction equipment repair. Strong verbal communication and understanding of oral and written instructions. Ability to handle tools, parts, and equipment weighing 10 to 110 pounds. Ability to adapt tools and parts to specific repair problems. Skill in operating tools and machinery used in mechanical repair. Ability to locate and adjust drivability defects in motor equipment.
