Position Summary


The Journeyman Electrician position is responsible for providing journeyman level skills and expertise in the installation, maintenance, preventive maintenance, remodeling, repair, servicing, and operation of the University's electrical systems from 120 volts up to 480 volts. The position assembles, installs, and repairs circuitry, switchgear, distribution systems, and all related components, while planning layout and installs wiring for electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment. The Journeyman Electrician is part of Facilities Management Department and reports to Master Electrician Supervisor.

Description of Job Duties

1. Respond and perform service calls in response to work orders and preventative maintenance.
2. Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, and equipment.
3. Troubleshoot electrical systems to identify problems and make repairs as needed following detailed operational and maintenance procedures.
4. Run/pull wire and install conduit; install and repair electrical circuits; and perform electrical work to support other trades (i.e., HVAC, Plumbing, etc.).
5. Inspect and test electrical systems and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair.
6. Test continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components with testing instruments such as multi-meter, battery and buzzer, and oscilloscope; troubleshoots and diagnoses electric systems to detect and repair functions.
7. Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and electrical code specifications to determine the layout of industrial electrical equipment installations.
8. Maintain a clean and safe work environment and adheres to applicable safety procedures.
9. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance and detailed inspection of electrical systems.
10. Install control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels from 120 volts up to 480 volts.
11. Support "Light the Way" annual event.
12. Maintain and document maintenance records, logs, and work order forms.
13. Maintains knowledge of the current National Electrical Code and its application.
14. Keeps current of changes in operational procedures, new equipment, and other related equipment; works in conjunction with other trades, staff personnel in support of daily job tasks; and informs appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies and takes appropriate actions.
15. Serves as lead electrician in absence of Master Electrician.
16. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Proficiency with the National Electrical Code and local codes.
• Strong proficiency in the general practices of commercial/industrial electricaltrade and safety and standard d i agnostic and measuringelectrical tools and devices.
• Strong proficiency in reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and submittals.
• Good knowledge of generators, transformers and switch gear.
• Comprehensive knowledge and experience of lock-out/tag-out program with regards to OSHA 29 CFR 19190.147 control of hazardous equipment.
• Ability to consistently follow written and/or oral instructions.
• Ability to effectively learn and use electronic work order system.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Ability to work independently and in group setting.
• Ability to effectively operate a forklift, boom lift, and scissor lift.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
• Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.

Required Education


High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Required Work Experience


One (1) year of skilled/journeyman-level commercial/industrial electrical experience since gaining the Journeyman License.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two (2) years of skilled/journeyman-level commercial/industrial electrical experience since gaining the Journeyman License.
• Technical trade school certification in electrical field.

Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations

• Current Journeyman Electrician License issued by the State of Texas. This license must be current at the time of hire and maintained throughout the period of employment.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver's license, driving record that is insurable by UIW insurance carrier, and be at least 21 years of age, as required to drive for UIW.

Work Hours


Monday trough Friday 8 am to 5 pm with flexibility based on departmental needs. However, hours may be adjusted to respond to emergency calls, shift work, overtime, and other university needs.

Physical Demands

• Ability and willingness to utilize/wear Personal Protective Equipment.
• Exposure to variable Texas weather conditions indoor/outdoor and/or physical hazards common to a physical plant and construction environment such as elevated and confined spaces. Works in attics, sub-floors, trenches, machine rooms and other occupational areas.
• Exposure to mechanical, electrical, plumbing or other hazards including biological and chemical hazards within certain laboratory spaces.
• Hand dexterity to safely and repeatedly use/operative hand tools of the trade.
• Exposure to various mechanical, electrical, laboratories, residence halls, and other university spaces.
• Must have good hearing to hear safety alarms and sirens.
• Must be able to frequently reach overhead, climb, kneel, crouch, or crawl, as well as work while climbing and balance on ladders, scaffolding, and building rooftops.
• Ability to effectively work in a boom-lift bucket.
• Must be able to regularly lift up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
• Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
• Must wear and properly maintain uniforms.
