Licensed Practical Nurse - Med Surg

Position Details Location: Sussex Campus Hospital Status: Full Time, 72 Hours Biweekly Shift: Days, 12-Hour Shifts Salary Range: $25.09 – $37.64 hourly General Summary The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides professional nursing care to patients within patient care services on medical‑surgical units. Professional nursing practices requiring specialized knowledge, judgment, and skill are performed in accordance with Bayhealth policies. After competency verification, the Licensed Practical Nurse may deliver patient care services to the adult and geriatric populations. The care may include, but is not limited to, obtaining and recording in the medical record: blood pressure, pulse, temperature, pulse oximetry, drawing blood, EKG, administration of oral medications, maintenance fluids, tube feedings, transporting patients, obtaining urine and stool specimens, performing point‑of‑care testing, assisting with procedures consistent with scope of position (e.g., dressing changes, urinary catheterization, bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, ambulating, transferring, feeding, observing, and reporting the general well‑being of the patient). Responsibilities The LPN must read and interpret documents such as doctors’ orders, medication names, and lab tests. Perform focal assessments for established inpatients. Provide general basic nursing care, such as positioning patients, lifting and turning, assisting in use of bedpan, commode, urinal or bathroom, and weighing. Provide exceptional customer service that aligns with the Planetree philosophy. Perform routine, uncomplicated treatment procedures including enemas, application of hot and cold compresses, dressing changes, wound cleansing, obtaining vital signs including orthostatic vital signs and rectal temperatures, and splinting of extremities. Collects and records intake and output. Prepare and administer oral medications as ordered. Administer maintenance intravenous fluids per physician order, under direction of the primary care Registered Nurse. Review medication history with patient. Assist with minor medical/surgical procedures in the practice setting. Perform venipuncture to monitor patient’s condition before, during, and after withdrawal of blood. Transport patients using wheelchair or stretcher within hospital and to/from vehicles. Assist those patients requiring help with ambulation. Identify the need for patient education and advise patients on their treatment plan. Recognize abnormal lab results. Document treatment records for each patient. Immediately report any observed changes in condition or behavior and document any care given in an acceptable medical‑legal fashion. Immediately report any unusual incidents. Set up for suturing and procedures using sterile technique; dismantle procedure set, caring for soiled instruments. Maintain patient confidentiality; comply with HIPAA and compliance guidelines. Ensure compliance with Joint Commission regulations and other safety requirements, including disposal of sharps, contaminated materials and safe storage of medications. Re‑order supplies within budgetary limitations. Maintain workstation cleanliness, restock linens and supplies, fill blanket warmer and IV trays, provide general cleaning, including emptying trash and straightening waiting area. Wash and change stretcher or exam table linens and empties dirty laundry. Reflect knowledge of current professional practice standards, laws and regulations, evaluate own practice, conduct annual self‑assessment, seek constructive feedback, act to achieve performance goals. Maintain current knowledge and competency in nursing care. Participate in ongoing education to acquire and validate knowledge (e.g., BLS, NAPSI). Maintain professional affiliations, attend staff meetings, perform tasks assigned by Charge Nurse/Clinical Coordinator, may act as backup for other staff. Interact with and contribute to professional development of peers and other healthcare providers. Share knowledge, skills and experience, provide constructive feedback, contribute to learning environment and team environment. All other duties as assigned within scope and range of responsibilities. Assist physician/surgeon by scrubbing in for Operating Room cases when properly trained, if applicable. Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience Education: Certificate Program or equivalent credit hours in an RN program. Credential(s): Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with Basic Life Support. Experience: New graduates may be considered. Preferred 2 years LPN experience.
