The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and specimen collection, troubleshooting issues, participating in training, and recommending workflow improvements. This position works in a fast-paced hospital environment, providing high-quality, courteous service to adult and geriatric patients while ensuring accurate specimen handling and adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced hospital and laboratory setting.
Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
Package specimens for transport, following designated procedures and protocols to preserve specimen quality.
Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling each sample.
Follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols necessary for transport and testing.
Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory standards.
Update patient information accurately in the system to support proper documentation and reporting.
Understand and fully comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety guidelines.
Attend and participate in annual department trainings and other required educational sessions.
Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
Work collaboratively as part of a team within the lab and while traveling to patient rooms to perform draws.
Manage a high patient volume, drawing between approximately 35 to 40 patients during morning shifts.
Essential Skills
Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states.
Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
High school diploma or GED.
2–4 years of overall experience in phlebotomy, laboratory, or related healthcare roles.
Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture and blood draw techniques.
Experience with specimen collection and handling, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens.
Ability to work effectively with adult and geriatric patients, providing courteous and professional patient care.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
Strong customer service skills and ability to communicate clearly and professionally with patients and staff.
Understanding of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and safety standards.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience working in a hospital laboratory environment and traveling to patient rooms to perform specimen collection.
Comfort working with adult and geriatric patient populations; no pediatric experience required for this role.
Ability to manage a high volume of morning draws, typically 35 to 40 patients per shift.
Strong attention to detail when matching requisitions to specimens and verifying test orders.
Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and adapt to changing workflow demands.
Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients.
Willingness to participate in ongoing training and annual departmental education.
Reliability and flexibility to work rotating holidays and weekends as part of the schedule.
Work Environment
This role is based in a hospital setting, working both in the laboratory and traveling to patient rooms to perform specimen collection. The Phlebotomist II primarily works with adult and geriatric patients and may draw between 35 to 40 patients during morning shifts. Typical schedules include shifts such as 4:00 AM to 1:30 PM or 5:00 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with specific hours reviewed during the interview process. The position requires working holidays and weekends on a rotating basis, approximately every third weekend. The environment is fast-paced and team-oriented, with a strong emphasis on accuracy, patient care, and adherence to safety and regulatory protocols. Standard hospital and laboratory equipment is used for blood draws, specimen collection, centrifuging, and storage, and staff follow established procedures to maintain specimen integrity and a safe, professional workplace.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $23.11 - $23.11/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
